I contacted Chase about having my existing Chase card converted to the Chase Shell card. They informed me this was possible. I really wanted to convert to the Stockback card, but they stated they could not convert an existing account to that particular program. I'd have to reapply. Does anyone have the Chase Shell Platinum card? If so, do you think the interest rate could be negotiated? Do you have a variable or fixed rate? How are the rewards awarded? The benefits look great. I'm really leaning toward conversion. Just wanted to hear other opinions if possible. Thanks!!
Chase is a funny bird. They don't seem to want to offer a reasonably low "go to" rate, but they will inundate you with 0%, 1.9%, 3.9% and so on. Here's my strategy: We have a Chase Plat. Visa - normal rate is PR+5.4%. But it says in the sock drawer and only gets used for cheap BT offers (<5.9%). It's a great deal, but I still don't understand how Chase makes money on it. We also have a Chase Shell Plat. MC. That's used for gas/auto purchases... monthly we get about a $15-20 rebate, and rarely do we revolve. The rate is PR+8.4% (under $2500 balance... over $2500 is PR+6.4). AVOID all temptations to xfer balances cheaply on this card - payments are applied to lower rate balances 1st , so you'll wind up paying down the low rate and accruing interest on the higher rate stuff longer. I originally wanted to combine these 2 into one massive card - but thought about the BT's and gas rebates ... for us it's best to have 2 accounts, one for purchases/rebates and one for BTs. **note: they do a good thing on the statement - they tell you how much to pay to avoid any of your gas purchases being revolved ... nice touch. The rebates are awesome. I've definitely made more money on this card than spent in interest. -mj
I recently converted my Chase Platinum card to the Chase Platinum iCard where I get a full 1% cash back on all purchases. I thought about getting the Shell Mastercard, but I heard that you need to use the card at Shell at least 9 times per year to avoid paying the $20 annual fee.
You're right, steve. You do have to use the card at least 9 times per year at Shell to avoid the $20 annual fee. That won't be a problem for me as I commute approx 20 mile each way per day for work.
