pbm, I'm having trouble logging into the chat room. The window loads, the banner at the bottom comes up, however where the room is supposed to be, there's nothing there except for a small square in the upper left hand corner. I'm not sure how many others are experiencing the same problem except that uniondiva and I tried at 5pm PST and were both unable to get in.
Hello mindcrime2, Is this problem a new one for you or have you never been able to use the chat feature on our site? The chat software we use is Java-based so your browser must be able to support loading Java applets in order for chat to function correctly. Can you confirm that you are using a Java-compatible browser? It would help if you could provide your browser type, browser version, operating system you are using and the specific version (e.g., Windows 2000, Mac OS X, Linux, etc.) Thank you, pbm
Hello pbm, This problem is new for me. I have, in the past, been able to use the chat room. I far as I know, I have made no changes to my browser. I am using: Internet Explorer 6.0.2600.0000 Windows 98 4.10.2222 A Thanks for your help. mindcrime2
Can you try it again, please? We have made a few modifications to the chat window that may have resolved the problem you were experiencing. Let me know either way. Thanks, -pbm
pbm, I attempted to log in to chat, and was unable to. I am still getting that small square in the upper left hand corner. I have: Set everything on my browser to 'default' level(s) - Which I would assume includes accepting java. However, I'm not 100%. Under tools/internet options/advanced tab I see this: Java VM Java Console Enabled (requires restart) -not checked Java logging enabled - not checked JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart) - checked ...And this is the 'default' setting. Are those the correct settings? I have also cleared my browser of all cookies, logged out, deleted all temp. files as well. Again, thanks for any help you can give me. mindcrime2
Hi mindcrime2, Check the boxes for: Java Console Enabled and Java logging enabled, restart your browser and try accessing chat. Although this will not fix your problem we may be able to gleen some valuable debugging info from the Console and/or the log. Please email me the results. Sincerely, pbm
pbm, I checked all of those boxes you asked me to. I then attempted to log in the chat room. Of course, as you predicted, it did not fix the problem. Hopefully you'll be able to see whats wrong with my browser. Thanks for all your help.
pbm, I'm sorry, (and this is where my ignorance of computers will show), I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to e-mail you. After I checked the radio buttons you told me to, and I logged into chat and got the same screen, what am I supposed to e-mail you exactly? Thanks for your patience.
You may have to manually open the window(s) by selecting the appropriate item from one of the drop down menus in IE. The general idea is for you to access our chat room with the Console and/or Log window(s) open. IE will hopefully capture error or debugging messages in either place. Any information that does appear I ask that you copy and paste into an email to me. Although I cannot make any promises, the captured info may help shed some light on the problem. If any of this is unclear please let me know. Sincerely, pbm
pbm, Thank you very much for all your time and effort in helping me out with the chat problem. Last night I was able to fix the problem. I had to install (or re-install) Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM). Apparently, I had a bad file or a missing file(s) and that was causing my problem. By the way, it was not just your website, it was others as well (I just found this out a couple of days ago). Anyway, like I said, thanks for your help. I appreciate you taking the time to assist me. Best regards, mindcrime
