Checking legitimacy of a claim

    Hello everybody --

A number of years ago I paid off a number of legitimate debts, some which had gone sour.

One, with US Bank, had been forwarded to a collections agency. I worked with the agency, paid it off and have a letter from the agency saying that US Bank accepted my final payment as payment in full for the debt.

Fast forward to early this year when I started getting hits from various CAs claiming I owe them, but not giving any details other than saying it's from US Bank. I send a verification letter, never hear back, and then a month or so later another one pops up. So, I'm assuming the debt is either illegitimate or questionable, and they just package and sell it.

As you may have guessed, another agency has popped up. They sent a letter, and it referenced my US Bank account number, so for the first time I've been able to see that the account number is the same as the one completely paid off.

I sent my standard verification request letter, so we'll see how they reply. But, I'm getting tired of the whole whack-a-mole game. Am I stuck with it?

Would the letter from the CA be any good at disproving the legitimacy of the debt, or should I attempt to contact US Bank? If so, what should I be looking for?

Thanks much for the help -- this forum has been a great source of information for me!
