Chevron - loose approval guidelines

I just received my Chevron card, and thought Iâ??d share the experience, thereby providing a loose set of guidelines. My credit file is very thin, and, having heard of their rebuilder program, I thought all I could qualify for was that. However:

    - I applied on their web site on Feb. 28. The system spit out a traditional â??youâ??ll hear from us in 7-10 days.â?

    - On March 4, I got a congratulatory email, telling me I was approved and that my card should be arriving in 7-10 days.

    - Today, March 8, the card arrived, carrying an initial limit of $400 and APR of 21%.

In a surprise move, they pulled EXP on me. I am in Massachusetts (there are no Chevron stations within 500 miles of where I live, but that didnâ??t seem to bother them).

    Here are my EXP specs:

    - 1 positive tradeline (installment loan), closed in 1996.
    - 1 paid charge-off (1996)
    - 1 credit card, opened February 2003 (no recorded activity)

Thatâ??s it. Oh, and 5 inquiries in the past 2 years (none in the last 6 months, until now).

EXP CreditExpert score: 711 at the time of application (dropped to 680 after the Chevron inquiry)

Hope this helps someone in deciding whether or not to go for Chevron.

711 seems to be a good score. The paid account in 1996 helped you with some age on the account.

hubby got their card about 4 months ago w/ terrible credit... he was denied for the traditional card, but they offered him the alternative credit program, $300 at 23.99%... he has vowed to be a chevron patron for life :) cause they gave him a chance when others woouldn't.

I was approved for the BP card even though they don't have any stations in my (fairly large) state. I guess they really want to issue cards, and figure you could be a cross-country motorist or a frequent flyer to distant cities.

My husband I were both denied for Chevron- they automatically turn down anyone with a BK on their reports :(

Still searching for a gas card that'll approve us.

    Smontoya...

I was approved and I have that pesky 94 bk on my report. Maybe it is because it is so old.

Anyhow, I am looking for anyone who has a Diamond Shamrock/Ultramar card.

Hubby wants one so we can have both (he is AU on my Chevron). His TU and EQ are totally clean, thin, but clean, so it doesnt matter if they pull either. Just not sure if they have loose guidelines like Chevron. His scores are still in 620-650's. I remember something about them from millcbs...and I thought score average on approvals was in this range. Any help?

I've never heard of this place- it's a gas station type thing?

Seems like all the gas cards that have pretty loose credit requirements are all based in the south or western states.

Here, we've got Mobil, BP, Shell (denied), Amoco, Clark, Speedway, etc.

Don't know why I want one so much- I charge all my gas station purchases on my mastercard and pay it off.

It's probably the fact that I always want what I cannot get :)

Yes, Diamond Shamorck is a big gas station/c-store chain here in TX. Not sure where else they are. Shell/Texco suck as far as approvals, so Ive heard. Not even trying for those.

It is nice to have a gas card...makes it easy to pay just one bill for gas and stuff. Of course, my Chevron limit is only 300 and, as I found out last month, we do use more than that in a month. I know it is just as easy to put it on a visa, but it's nice having the card. Interest rate doesnt bother me because we pay it every month.

My cousin got an Ultrmar card with scores in the low 600's about 8 months ago.

Some cards may be tougher now since the default rates are climbing.

Just got the Shell/Texaco card... low CL $200... if you have a Citi card with a good record for a few months they will usually send a pre-approval. Just a thought.

    Is shell/texaco a gas card or a visa/mc? Thanks.

Congratulations! From what I hear, they may or may not tell you what your limit is over the phone, but it (the limit) will arrive with the card. There is no need to active the card, either, you can use it as soon as you get it.

Thanx, really my hubby needs it, he hauls cars several times a week to fro auctions and it would help to keep expenses seperate if he has a card to put his fuel on. Thanx for the tip too!
