    You could be OVER-PAID $20,000 and BOUNCE a $40.00 check...you pay the
    BOUNCE FEE!!!

I never said the bill was 40 bucks.
They can't disconnect the gas, the bill is over paid.
I don't know what bank to call.and if i did I wouldn't know what check to ask them about.
None of this information is in the letter from the gas company.

I have spent all of my winters in Ohio except for the one in Tx.

I did ask the Gas Co.the check #.Said they couldn't tell me.
How can they have a returned check and not know the number?

You don't know what bank to call??????? How many checking accounts do you have currently?? Did you or did you not write a check for 40.00??

Exactly. lbrown, cut the crap. You must know if you wrote a $40 check. I mean, either you did or you didn't. The answer isn't "well I can't tell by this letter". Pure unadulterated b.s.

Wrote lots of checks for $40.
What ever.but the letter is usless for tracking it down.
Why couldn't they have included the check number and the bank on the letter?

Why can't you just admit you bounced one and take care of it? I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish.

Who cares what was on the darn letter. So you have a habit of writing numerous checks for the exact amount of 40.00 hmmmmmm.

If you would just stop all this BS and call your banks this would be resolved, but no you make excuse after excuse.

as LKH put it cut the crap

    Dude,

You're acting like a petulant child.

So, they're not perfect! Call the banks & find out which has a recent NSF noted on your account.

Most utility companies allow automatic draft for your bills. The only bills I mail out a check for anymore are periodic life & car insurance payments.

Do that & get Quicken to make your life easier.

If, as you say, you don't write checks when the $$ isn't there, & you keep a running tally of your accounts, then you know full well whether you bounced a check.

What are you trying to prove? My guess is you know you wrote a bad check to the company, you know what account you wrote it from, and you know for how much. Apparently, you want the gas company to prove this to you, but you're not going to win on a technicality. A bounced check is illegal. Not only do you owe the gas company $40, but if you don't pay them you will find yourself in front of a judge with higher fines and quite possibly a few days in jail. Your choice.

Also, it is not the bank's job to contact you. Since this is your account and your money it is your obligation to make sure that you have enough funds in the account to make good on any and all checks written by you.

It is NOT the banks job to inform you that you have written a bad check. They are not your accountants.

If you write an NSF check the bank has the right to immediately close your account without notice. They also have the right to report you to Chex, etc.

Many banks will close your account for NSF activity and report you to ChexSystems even if the NSF checks are resubmitted and subsequently clear your account. It is considered fraudulent activity.

    Got this resolved:
    This is what happened::
The bank where I had my checking sold out to another bank about a Yr.ago.

With the old bank I had free inst. checking and no Min. Bal. and no fees of any kind.I could write as many checks per Mo.as I wanted at no extra cost.I got my canceled checks back also at no charge.

The new bank let me keep this arrangement through 12/31/2001.As of 1-1-2 they were going to start charging me a $7.50 monthly service fee plus 35 ¢ per check for over 25 checks a month. It would have also have cost me a service charge of $2.00 every time I called them to ask anything about the account.I also would have to maintain a $1000.oo balance in the account at all times or the cost to have the account would be much higher. If I still wanted my canceled checks back now it would cost me another $2.00.a month.

I wrote my last checks on this bank on 11-25-1 and got them out by 11-29-1.
On 1-1-2 I closed this account at the bank as I had opened a checking account at the credit union earlier to replace this account with. The terms at the CR UN are the same as I have always had except I pay 3 bucks a month to get the canceled checks back.

The only check that had not cleared the old account when I closed it out on 1-1-2 was the 11-25-2001$40.00 check mailed to the gas company on 11/29/1. This check would have cleared also had the gas company not drug their A$$ in presenting it for payment and waiting to post it on 1-10-2

So this is the gas co.'s fault? You should have balanced your checking account before closing it.

I mailed them a check on 11-29-1 they posted it on
    12-6-1.
The check in question was mailed on 11-28-1 but they did not post it untill 1-10-2.
there is no excuse for them having sat on a check they got 2 days before the other one.
Had they processed this check in a timely manner too, there would have been no returned check.
They had no business setting around for over a month with the check stuck up their A$$.
    D** right it's their fault.

I did but because of the gas compaines improper processing of the check they threw it out of balance and there was nothing i could do about it.

PS I still do not know why the check was returned?

I replaced the 40 bucks with a check from a different bank before the gas company ever posted the other one.The check has already been replaced has it not???

Balancing the account don't much help problems caused by changes in bank policy or procedures.
