Even the Famous Called to Active Duty

Montgomery County, Maryland Police Chief Charles A. Moose--Chief Moose as he's better known--has been called up by the National Guard for active duty. The man made famous the world over when two snipers unleashed their terror on Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. last fall, will serve his country in one of two ways: He will either oversee security at Andrews Air Force Base or be deployed to Iraq.

The Washington Post reports that Moose commands the 113th security forces squadron in the District of Columbia Air National Guard, which was mobilized on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and ordered immediately to Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George's County, Maryland.

"We don't know whether he's going to be here or over there," Staff Sgt. Sophia Piellusch, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Air National Guard, told The Post. Meanwhile, one of the chief's three assistants has been appointed as acting police chief. Before Chief Moose joined the Montgomery County police force in August 1999, he served in the Oregon Air National Guard from 1987 to 1998.
