Watching everyone do the Citi BDD method, was pretty depressing because I had a chargeoff with them from 1993 (long story, but to sum it up I was a poor college student and I got in over my head with credit cards)

Well I established a checking account with them in early Feb. and I also had gotten a Shell card in Jan. which was taken over by Citibank.

So after cleaning most of the bad stuff off of TU, except for a late pay on my student loans that reports across 9 accounts from June 98. I decided to give it another shot with the silver AA. According to TU my score at the time was 619 (eloan was 642). I didn't get an automatic approval (so I didn't apply for the gold), but within a week. I got a letter confirming my new mastercard with a $2,400 limit (not great, but not bad either considering a year ago my highest CC limit was $960 and that was secured).

So I don't know if have a checking account and the Shell card was the deciding factor, but I do think it helped push me over the hurdle of having an old "unpaid" chargeoff with them. Just as an FYI, the chargeoff was for about $980.

So there is hope for those of you on Citi's blacklist.

I also had a Citi chargeoff from 1996. I applied for the Platinum Select last Novemeber and was instantly approved for $5,000. I then applied for the AA Gold and was approved through the mail for $9,000. I later switched the gold card to the Dividend Platinum Select.

I was not that lucky. CC account included Ch7 in 1987. Applied for cl increase in existing (perfect payment history) platinum in Feb but got denied immediately.

    Thanks for letting me know.

    I had a chargeoff in 97.

I don't think I would ever have a card from them after the way they treated me. But, it's nice to know it's not impossible.

Careful about opening a bank account with someone you owe money. They do have the power to do an offset if there internal system matches up your ssn # with the chargeoff.

Yes Keepmine, that is a good warning. I was aware they could do this when I opened the account so I was not using it as my primary account. Just a place where I could stash a few dollars here and there and to reestablish a relationship with them.

It is amazing the things that you don't know can happen but do everyday (like collection accounts being put on your credit report for parking tickets, library fines, etc.) and the ability of a bank to close your account and take your money if you owe them on a previous debt without a judgement.

But you soon learn by being a Creditnet member.

I can see taking the money but where is the logic in closing the account?

Most banks have minimum balances, without which the account would be forcibly closed.

If the balance is over Min. Can they still close the account?
Also if they close the account what about any outstanding checks?

This is a bummer. Why shouldn't they have to sue same as anyone else would?
