Citi "splits" old limit for 0% apr

    Hi all,

I finally did it. I finally got a 0% apr card for balance transfers for 9 months. :)

I could not get them to give me 0% apr on my existing card, so I applied for a new one. I was denied - again - for an old CO from 1997. I asked for a reconsideration, only to have a manager call me back saying that I reached the max for the amount of credit Citi could give me.

Based on my experiences with AmEx, I asked her if she would consider decreasing my current line by $1000, and allocating that $1000 to the new card in order to approve me. And, voila, it was done immediately. It saves me a lot of interest this year! Enough to justify the $50 BT fee associated with the balance transfer.

    But, just in case...

Has anyone successfully had Citibank waive a balance transfer fee before?

    Thanks,

"R" can waive the BT fee if you can get through. Seems they are alot harder to get in touch with as of lates.

    Thanks, Sam.

I will try to get to retention via the "old" account since it will have a zero balance and perfect payment history (3-5X minimum payments). I can't imagine why they'd deny me access to retention on that account.

Once I'm in retention, I will ask them to switch over to look at the "new" account and waive the BT fee, combine the accounts and send me a check for the BT. I hope to do this in one phone call.

    Citi retention direct line...

    Hi Sam and Geo.

I got through to Citi retention on the old account, and, guess what, Sam! You don't have to ask to be transferred anymore. The rep gave me the direct number to call back next week after my new account gets set up. :)

The retention rep was so nice. As I was being transferred from regular CS, I got cold feet and hung up, thinking I'd try again next week. To my surprise, he called me back (at home) immediately after I hung up and wanted very earnestly to know what he could do for me.

He was extremely nice, but said that the only way my old account could get the 0% apr offer was if I received a pre-approved offer in the mail specifically for me. Otherwise, I'd have to take it on the new account.

But that can't be true b/c GEORGE was able to get 0% apr on a Platinum Select that he got via the BDD. So, it is possible to get 0% on an account not marketed for it - but I wonder if the Office of the President has to okay it first.

    incorrect number...

    Sam and others,

Sorry - but that number I posted doesn't work, so disregard it. The rep gave me the wrong number. I'll try to get the correct one the first of next week.
