You can convert to their Platinum Select when you get your card. The APR will be lower and there is no fee.

    raiderpam,

I don't know you need to open certain period of time like 6 months to 1yrs in order for lowering the APR. I have mine down to 10.49% for my Sony Card and Citibank Dividend Card to 9.49%. By the way, they need to review your account for lowering your rate. I don't know whether they can lower your APR or not since your account is new.

You may be looking at the AA Platinum card not their standard Platinum Select. The standard Platinum Select is not a rewards card so the APR will be lower than any of the AA cards plus there is no annual fee.

Just wait until you get you card, call the number on the back and convert. You don't even need to be sly, just tell them you would rather have a card with a lower APR and no annual fee, so you wanted to convert to the Platinum Select.
