Citibank Silver AA denial -- help!

Ok, after getting my nerve up, and getting my scores up to the low 600s, I decided to apply for the Citi AA Silver card..

My biggest problem: my history with Citibank...I had a Citi student card charge-off in 1998...paid it off in full a couple months ago (and just got it deleted from my credit reports last week)

Anyway, I got a denial letter from Citi, and decided to call for reconsideration. The first rep was RUDE, and told me that I could NEVER be a Citibank customer again due to my charge-off. I said "fine" and hung up. I called back 5 minutes later, and talked to a nice rep who agreed to reconsider my application. She put me on hold for a few minutes, came back, and said to reapply in 6 months...that my charge-off had been paid off too recently, and that I should be able to get this card after it's been paid for a few months..

Should I just wait 6 months and apply again, or does anyone think I should try again or try for a supervisor?

jmart, we have always known that Citibank maintains a blacklist. It's debated here as how long one remains on the blacklist. But it's more than 6 months.

IMHO I would wait for the 6 months and built your scores up.In six months take a look at what your scores are and if this is your only derog you will receive other cc offers. There are other prime lenders out there.

At this point both reps can only agree that no Citibank card would be issued to you at this point. So don't waste your time with Citibank.

    Best regards,

Please forgive me if I cross the line and step on your toes here, but I think it's unreasonable to expect Citi to consider your application so soon after paying your charge-off account.

Think about it from Citi's standpoint. You recently screwed them, then said you're "sorry" by paying it off, and now you expect to regain all of your charge privileges... just like that! Presto. I'm sorry. Now let me have another chance. NOW!

In my mind, what you're asking is the equivalent of not paying your rent due the landlord, in-turn being evicted for not paying the rent, then suddenly paying up and expecting to move right back in. C'mon, don't you think you're asking too much?

You *can* get another Citi card, the charge off notwithstanding. But you *do* need to wait longer than two months before applying again.

They are looking for 2 years+ between the last Citi derog and a new Citi card. And, you will need to scale up to a supervisor. Did you get the name of the rep who told you to wait 6 months? If so, she very well may be a manager and maybe she'd be the person to talk to in 6 months.

But, realistically, Citi wants some significant time to lapse between pay-off of a derog account and opening of a new unsecured account. It woudl be bad business practice, if they didn't...

Points well taken.. I guess I didn't know if they were guageing from the time the chargeoff occured ('98), or when I paid it off.. I forgot to mention I had another account with them that they bought from Bank of America a few years ago (after the charge-off, strangely). This account is paid in full, never late, but has a low $500 credit limit.

Guess Capital One spoiled me.. I got their guys to delete a tradeline and open a new account for me if I paid the remaining balance of a previous charge-off settlement..

Citi has agreed to delete the chargeoff from my reports (just agreed to do this on Friday), so I'm definitely lucky.. Guess I'll wait a few months and then try again..

My F.I.C.O. has been 685-711 and thanks to the "BDD" I finally got my PLATINUM SELECT...I WAS DENIED THAT CARD I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES...ON-LINE, MAIL, PHONE...EVEN SO-CALLED "PRE-APPROVED"...

I even have a PERFECT PAYMENT history with CITIBANK...2 cards for like 5 years...(got better deals...so I dropped them).

    George,

You were obviously the victim of a Citibank blacklist of cardholders who close their accounts. Never close a Citibank account, ever again. They consider that as bad as defaulting on an account.

I closed a citi gold account when they tried to raise interest rate to 24%. I can still use it at the old rate until the card expires (will issue no new cards on the account. It expires later this year. I have a closed ATT (paying off at 6% interest) and an open citibank USA. I was able to get AA Silver online...did not try for BDD. I don't think info totally accurate. Also, on the jackup that has been discussed. I wonder if they only do the jackup if card is near limits or not.
