Has anyone actually tried loading a Cobalt card and then getting free travellers cheques at a AMEX printing machine?

Nope. I went into my bank to try - they wouldn't take the card. They said they take AmEx at the ATM but not inside. Do they give locations where you can do it?
Been a while since I read about it.

I wonder if you went into an Amex travel agency and tried to get Amex travel checks on it?

I believe you can. When I went to their online site, the method of payment included AMEX cards.

Ordering through their site is not free (last I checked).

Nope, it's not. For $500 it's a $10 service fee, plus "shipping" (regular ole stamped envelope thru U.S. mail) which generally amounts to about $3.95

If you locate an American Express Traveler's Cheque ATM (which dispenses only traveler's checks), then there is no fee if you use the CobaltCard. The problem: these ATMs are generally located only at the largest international airports -- NYC Laguardia, Atlanta, Chicago O'hare, LAX, Dulles, Miami, to name a few.
