I have a question. Does anyone know if a collection co has to show me proof that they own the account? Am I just supposed to take their word for it on their "letterhead". They are telling me they don't owe me any proof that they currently own it. What's a man to do???

Send them a cease and desist letter and dispute the account with the bureau. The burdon of proof is their responsibilty.

Yes, a validation letter would be the first step. Search the site for
"validation" and "validate". You'll find sample letters all over the place.

If they don't respond to two validation request, then send a cease and desist
letter instructing them to never place it on your credit report or (if it's on there)
to take it off and to never contact you again.

Then dispute with the CRAs to have it deleted as "not mine" if it's already reported.

If you really do owe the debt and can pay it, deal with the original creditor
and work out a settlement for deletion or non-entry.
