I disputed a collections account over a year ago with Equifax. It is still showing as an unpaid collection with DISPUTED on it. Its for a miserable $39.00, but I am NOT paying it because I don't owe them. Anyway, I contacted Equifax and I thought it would be simple enough to just have it removed. WRONG! They say that "collections remain on file, even if we can't verify them, you must contact the collection agency to have this removed" What is my next step?
that is what I thought... Unfortunately I disputed it again and told them that if they can not verify it, it should be deleted. That is when she told me that "Collection accounts" remain on file. (she said it like it mattered whether it was a collection or a revolving) I'm lost!
From FCRA: § 611. Procedure in case of disputed accuracy [15 U.S.C. § 1681i] (a) Reinvestigations of disputed information. (1) Reinvestigation required. (A) In general. If the completeness or accuracy of any item of information contained in a consumer's file at a consumer reporting agency is disputed by the consumer and the consumer notifies the agency directly of such dispute, the agency shall reinvestigate free of charge and record the current status of the disputed information, or delete the item from the file in accordance with paragraph (5), before the end of the 30-day period beginning on the date on which the agency receives the notice of the dispute from the consumer. Coll. disputed for over a year... They say that "collections remain on file, even if we can't verify them, you must contact the collection agency to have this removed" ====================Boy don't this prove how wrong I am about them ?
Call them again. In fact, if you had called right back and gotten a different airhead to speak to, you would probably have had better results. Luck of the draw I guess. Gib
