I am looking to get a house this year and figured I would take a look at my credit score. I did an Equifax credit report and everything looked ok, I did a free signup with freecreditreport.com to see my actual score and I have a collection debt on it that I forgot about. It is for a stupid video game that apparantly was never returned, the claim is from 04 and I was stupid and never paid it. The last payment history is Aug 04 and has a KD in red. The account status is listed as closed. Is there a way I can get this off of my credit score?

    Thanks

You may want to check if it was in fact paid anyway.

Many rental account agreements (Blockbuster, for example) allow the company to charge your card for unreturned items. If they had your card number, and ran thru that charge based on your agreement, resulting in paying off your account, no valid debt would be due. That doesn't mean it might not go to collection anyway.

    Check your back CC statements.

Thanks, I don't have any records of my statments from 2004, but I am about 99.9% sure I did not have a credit card when I opened my account with Hollywood video.

Be aware that "freecreditreport.com" is not free if you fail to cancel within designated times. If you are expecting to use this for pulling on-going reports as you proceed to deal with your problems, this may not be an issue.

Yes I am aware that it is only free for the first 30 days. Luckily this is my only issue on my credit report.

If it is your intention to cancel before charges start, be sure to do so in a timely fashion, obtain whatever cancellation verification they provide, and follow up in writing, sent certified. You may need to be ready to beat them over the head to get them to cancel and stop taking your money, by filing an FTC complaint, and having written proof that they received your cancellation.
