Consumer Statement is not mine?

I had an entry listing a major credit card on my Experian report listed as Inactive/Never late last reported in 1995, opened in 1988. It wasn't my account so I disputed it.

In the entry, my current report says under status: This item was verified on 9/2001. Then right underneath it it says:

CONSUMER STATEMENT: Item disputed by consumer

Does this "statement" that I did not make remain on the report as long as the account does? Can i have it removed?

Ask the CRA to PROVE the account is yours, then if that doesn't work to remove it, ask the business to prove the account is yours.

I did. They changed the status on the account to: This information was verified/upated.

It's not a negative item so I figured I'd just leave it there but the consumer statement is bothersome to me.

    Thanks George.

How did they PROVE the account was yours?

Don't try to get it removed. FCRA says that once you have notified the creditor or 3rd party collector they must place a statement on your credit bureau file notating that the debt is being disputed by the consumer.

They are just doing what the law demands that they do.

Of course, as far as I know, that only applies if you disputed with the original creditor or 3rd party collector.

If you only disputed with the CRA, that may be another matter. I always used to force them to take that off until I quit fiddling with the CRAs.

I never approached the original creditor or any collection agency. I simply used the online dispute at Experian and said the account was not mine. They never notified me of anything. I just happened to pull my Experian report last week and saw that under Status, the info was changed..

The account is listed in good standing with a $1k limit from Chase. It's listed as Inactive/Never Late.

I figured anyone looking at my report would wonder why I applied for, got, and use an Associates card with a $300 limit when I have this (inactive) Chase card.

I called Chase months and months ago and gave them my SS and the person said they had no record of me, that it had been purged and to fax the info to a particular number so they could research it. I never did.

I disputed it online with Experian and here we are.
