I recently found an outstanding court judgment from 2004 on my credit report. After some digging, I found that it was a Citi credit card, with the debt sold to Platinum Financial Services and filed in court by Wolpoff & Abramson. Further research has shown that PFS & W&A don't seem to exist anymore. Does anyone know a way to figure out who is currently holding that debt? I need to get it settled, and I've been banging my head against a wall for a week now. Thanks in advance!
This is a tough situation because it will be difficult to find out who actually holds the debt until they contact you. Have you tried contacting the clerk of the court or the judge who handled the case to see if you can get any information about how to satisfy the claim? Are you sure these guys are completely out of business and didn't just close shop and start again under a new name? I've never heard of them, but I'll do some digging as well.
Thanks for the response. I haven't been contacted by anyone on this, and the judgment is from 2004, so I doubt anyone is going to start calling me soon. The law firm, Wolpoff & Abramson, merged with Mann Bracken a few years ago, and Mann Bracken seems to have collapsed last year. Platinum Financial Services doesn't seem to exist anymore either, and an older post on this board indicated that they were owned by the same people who ran Wolpoff & Abramson. I talked to the court clerk and all they could tell me was that the judgment had to be paid to the plaintiff's attorney, which why I'm at a dead end. Is there any resource that anyone knows of to track down ownership of a debt? My credit report just lists the court information, so that's not helpful either.
I'm fairly certain there isn't any kind of system that could help you track down the debt. However, I remember hearing that NCO was interested in purchasing all of Mann Bracken's old accounts. I'm not sure if that deal was ever closed, but you may want to look into that. Perhaps the OC might have some sort of information too?
