i went ahead and signed up for the credit monitoring with true credit while i'm trying to fix my situation. after checking out everything I noticed equifax is reporting an auto loan which was current and paid in full but it's more than 14 years old! I did an online dispute for other items with equifax but rather than actually investigate it they sent me a letter asking for a copy of my social security card and utility bill...should I provide these or is that risky? I know i've read not to provide that info to the collection agencies but how about the credit reporting agencies? i have 3 current lines of trade open with diff credit card accounts..they al lnow show current but is there a way to sweet talk the cc companies in removing the previous lates?
Is the auto loan TL a derog? If it isn't a negative thing, I'd leave it there, no matter how old. However, it is listed as a negative you'd want to clean that up. From what you said, it shouldn't be listed as a negative. Older, positive accounts add to your length of credit history, which is a key part to your overall credit picture and score. I've seen a pie chart that shows how your report and scores are made, but here is a link to another chart that will say the same thing: http://www.creditinfocenter.com/creditreports/scoring/scoringinfluences.shtml I think that it's odd for EQ to ask for your SS card and a utility bill aslo - did they say why? I wonder if there is a question about identity, like your name may be getting mixed up with another person with the same name. Sometimes being a junior in the family can do that too. What was the reason you gave in the dispute that prompted them to ask for this info? RE: the lates. If those accounts are 3 yrs old or older, (the older the better)I might try disputing - they may not be yours, records may not still be around; they may not be able to get verified, they may get removed. Depending on the age, you may want to wait for a while to try that. Otherwise, I don't know of anything to do about them. I'm not sure if they count for a lot in points, and actually, if they are old anyway, when a person looks at it and sees some late payments that are old, it may not matter too much. Please consider other opinions on all of this - I have learned some things, but am by no means an expert.
Equifax does this as a matter of policy now. I suppose there are many identity thieves which prefer to rebuild victims credit and then destroy it rather than just go for the good stuff right off the bat. They're a diligent bunch you know . . . Seriously, you have two options: 1) send them the information they request and have your request for re-investigations conducted or 2) don't and see your request rejected.
thanks for the replies. yes the auto loan is positive so i guess i'll just leave it alone. and as far as sending the info they requested I guess I'll go ahead and do that as well thanks again
