CRA Reporting Requirements?

I'm curious about what information a CRA requires from a creditor to add a TL to a person's file?

Reason I'm asking is this: Just rec'd collection notice (good grief - thought I was done getting those!!) from Dymacol for Columbia House Video. I suspect that my ex-roommate opened this account in my name - and w/out my permission (nice girl... I moved in to help her through a divorce, this is how I'm repaid...). So, the account was obtained fraudulently, right? But, in the meantime, I'm concerned that they will report this to a CRA, but Columbia House does not/has not collected SSN & DOB info. Can this be inserted into my file w/out having SSN & DOB???

BTW, thanks for all the generosity you guys show every day in sharing your knowledge and experiences. It has totally given me a new sense of determination and empowerment - greatly appreciated!!

If you have no knowledge of the acct, and it is fraudulent, how do you know they do not have you're ss# and DOB? All anyone needs to report is a name and addy, I can tell you that from personal exp. My brother in law has the same name as myself, different spelling. He used our addy years ago before I even came into the pic. That caused our reports to be merged and accts that were actually his to be reported on my reports. The ss#'s were different, different DOB etc. Still reached my reports bc of name and addy.

Yes collection accounts can be reported with just a name and an address. It happened to a friend of mine with BMG (12 CD's for a penny) about 5 years ago. I remember he had little problem getting it deleted.

Credit reports can also be pulled with just a name and address...PI's do this type of thing often.

On a side not, I've just learned that all 3 major CRA's require all of subscribers to report no less than 500 accounts once a month. This to me seems like a reason why smaller collection companies may report outdated accounts.

A friend of mine signed up w/ Columbia House this morning - they did not ask for SSN or DOB. Also, I get Columbia House & BMG solicitations for the previous owner of my home - no request for SSN or DOB to open account.

OK, just wondering. But to answer you're question, as I stated above, all they need is name and addy.

Thanks, that makes sense now that I think about it a little more. And could possibly explain how a mysterious collection appeared on my CR last year. I share the exact same name (uncommon name/spelling) w/ someone else in my town and all a CA would have to do is open a phone book to get an address... Hardly seems fair though. Thanks again!
