For anyone who doesn't know, I have had my Capone green card for 2 years in December. I have only had one increase and that was in July of this year. It was a whopping $100. My card is secured with $200, my limit is now $300. I called today to try and get an increase. I thought you could get one every three months but I found out that it's every six months. Sedric, the rep I talked to told me to call back in December to ask for an increase. Now, if the increase was in July (i think it was around the 30th) I would not be eligible until January. And then I asked about it becoming unsecured and well, his answer was so vague that I don't even remember what he said. What a joke. Now I think I am going to change my game plan. And that is keep the Capone card until my Orchard is a couple of months away from being two years old and then close Capone. Orchard will be two years old in June. I hate Orchard too but at least its not secured. I would like to use that $200 bucks for a new TV or apply it to my Optima card. What do you guys think?

I think that is a very good idea. If you've had the account for 2 years and no increase, it is time to give up that account. However, when you call to cancel, they'll probably unsecure it at that time and maybe give you an increase, but who knows with Capital One. I called a few days ago to have my limit increased via the automated system. I was denied. The system stated I would receive a letter soon regarding the denial. I immediately called back to speak to a representative and stated I wanted to close my account (and I was serious). She of course transferred me to a retention specialist who stated I was denied due to have a whopping $200 increase in June. I stated that I have had this account for 2 years (never late or over limit) and I had to REQUEST a limit increase in June as they have NEVER offered me one. I stated that thE limit on this card was too low & not worth keeping. She immediately gave me a $500 increase. I guess that's fairly good for Capital One, but I think I deserve more.
BTW molly, my brother just received an Orchard Mastercard. The customer service # on the back of the card is a toll #. I thought I read a while back that they have a toll free #. Do you know anything about this? Thanks in advance! :)

It's always been a rule of thumb for me that if the number on the back of a card is a *toll* number, then that card needs to go!

Yes the # is in area code 503, but they have a 800 # ,you must call that # to get it. They also have online service but it doesn't work sometimes. I also have a capone gold card that I just received in Oct., the limit is $200 unsecured. I might wait and see if I can combine. I will not close it if they give me a $500 increase, at least not until the summer.

    I agree with you, but..

he had to file chapter 13 bk a couple of years ago & he is still making payments. He has a lot of work ahead of him to build his credit back up. Not too many creditors are sending offers to individuals who are still paying a chapter 13 except for the ones with extremely high fees and poor customer service. Orchard has a good reputation so far. I didn't want to lead him to Cross Country! ;-)

This is strange. I got a cap one in January of 2000 with a 200 limit, in 3 months I received a $100 increase then 6 months later I received another $100 increase. About a week ago I received a letter upgrading me to gold and a $500 increase. I guess every customer is different.

Yes, every customer is different. YOu didnot mention anything about your card being secured. Capital one is very stingy with their secured accounts. I got a 300 increase after having my card for 3 months. But the card wasnot secured.

    Molly,

    Molly,
I would like to but my 2cents in . First of all your account is secured. Capital one for some strange reason is stingy with secured cards. Since you have a new card you can play hard ball with them. They will not combine your accounts for 6 months. That is just the rules. But you can certainly insist on a credit line increase. I would call so cancel the account. REason being, they should have unsecured it by now or sent you an offer to do so. What do you have to lose. You already have another account with them. 2 years is more than enough time to secure a good credit score for the account. So, like I said, I would call to cancel. They will ask you want you want, they will 1) give you an immediate increase or 2) BS. If they do #2- you close the account. So what. Then I would use the new account for trades. Do not end up paying 2 annual fees for 2 little $200 capital one accounts, it just ain't work it. On the new account, I would call back and threaten to close that account. I would tell them that you are trying to decrease you # of tradelines. I got a $300 increase this month on a capital one $200 MC that I got in Sept.'00. I called to close the account, after I had $0 balanced the account. They knew I was serious. I called again and closed the account anyway, but they did up the account to $500 only after 2 months when I called to close it. Bottom line, I would not keep a secured card for over a year. Adios.
