Credit and a new job

    Hi everbody,

I have a two part post with a couple questions. Any help/insight you can give is very much appreciated.

A little history. I had some financial problems during college and subsequently, have 3 collection items and some late payments on my credit reports. I am graduating in December and over the past year, I have made leaps and bounds in order to improve my credit score. I have paid off all of all of my collections in full, as well as all of my credit cards (which have been closed for a while now; I know it probably wasn't the best idea to close them but...), except for one which has $300 left on it out of a $1000 limit. My credit scores are currently hovering around 600 and I recently obtained a secure credit card from my Bank in order to attempt to rebuild my credit.

I have two questions, the first involving the collection items on my credit reports. Is there any way, after having paid them in full, to go back to the collection agencies and ask them kindly if they would be willing to delete them? Can I ask to pay them to delete them if not? Basically anything to get those collection items off my credit report at this point would greatly increase my scores I feel.

The second question invovles my new job. I was recently extended a job of which I accepted with a consulting company. The first question regarding this is, how likely is it for a company to rescind an offer due to poor credit (and would my 600 scores be low enough for them to care)? The second part invovles a corporate credit card. I believe I am going to be required to apply for an AMEX corporate credit card of which I am almost certain I will be rejected (have not been able to get a credit card for quite some time). Should I be hesitant to apply or just apply and see what happens?

Thanks for any help/info you can give me. I had a rough time during college but am now diligently trying to repair and build credit so that I can be in a good position to buy a house, etc. in the coming years.

You might want to first try to dispute the collections with the credit bureaus. If the collection agencies don't reply when the CRA tries to verify the info, they will come off.

IF your new position involves Accounting or dealing with Financials, you may have an issue, ie your new position is an Accountant or a Financial consultant.

If not, i wouldn't worry about it. I've had 2 jobs this year with credit checks and i passed through with flying colors even though my score is below 600.

For the most part they are looking for Felonies or things of that nature.

The new position does not involve accounting or financials (I will be a business/tech consultant). It is also my first 'real' job out of college so I am hoping that they will understand the potential to get into fniancial trouble while in college.
