My kids school now do this if you are going to volunteer. They are sending home a paper if you want to volunteer for the Halloween party you have to fill it out. Does anyone have any experience with this. I know that my criminal background is not the problem.. but are they going to deny me being able to volunteer if I have bad credit? That is going to be embarrassing :( Does anyone have any experience with this?

Some people here are going to have a big problem with this, so I'm going to get my post in first.

I have to agree with them, though. I really fail to see how your credit report would be relevant here. About the only thing I can come up with is that if your credit report shows that your cards are maxed out and you're way behind on payments you might be more likely to kidnap some kid for ransom... but even that is stretching it.

Personally, I'd ask the principal or whoever is looking at the credit reports exactly what they're looking for. Maybe even volunteer to bring in a copy of yours from home. That way you would know in advance if you'll be rejected and save an inquiry on your report.

I love the idea about the criminal background check but the credit check seems a bit odd to me unless there was money to be dealt with. Plus it will be an inquiry.

There is no way in hell I'd submit to a credit check if I'm volunteering my time.
Since children are involved, I think a criminal background check is prudent policy but a credit check is way over the top.

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid you can't help us. You see, that 30 day late on your Sears account places you in a group of people that we must refuse help from. So sorry."

    Un-friggin-believable.

I would fill out the form and line through any lines that state they will check your credit, put a notice next to the crossed out section stating that you are not authorizing them to pull your credit report, since an inquiry on a credit report will lower your score. Be sure to make a copy of the form before you send it back with your kids. This way they can do one of three things. 1: Check your criminal record, see that it's clean, and allow you to volunteer. 2: Refuse you because you won't let them run a credit check on you. 3: Illegally and without PP run a credit report on you at which point you ITS and then sue them.

My work recently inacted a criminal check on all employees (the policy was only criminal check employees who regularly enter customers homes) The form they handed out was to be sent back into some company, and it was a generic form which had criminal and credit checking information on it. I asked about that, and the data that they were ordering was to only include criminal background. I still line item crossed out any permission to do a credit check, but this is probably the same case with the school. They purchase the "Background Check" services from a company, and that company issues to them a generic form. They probably don't want a credit check, and if they do, I would NEVER volunteer my time for the school. That is none of their damn business.

...and then you pull your score and...

FICO top Negative Factors in lowering your score:

1.> You have volunttered too many times in the past 12 months at your children's school as evidenced by the number of times they have pulled your credit with a "VS" designation. Don't you know you should be working overtime instead?

    -----

Then, DENIED for your next CC since you aren't following predefined patterns! Sound unrealistic? That's the direction things are going in right now. Who knows, you may be DENIED a JOB because you have applied for TOO MANY JOBS IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS! We need to put an end to this crap.

This is a common thing now with all the pedophiles out there - we are now a pedophile until we prove we're not.

IU'm an umpire for the Little League and I had to go through that also. When I'm around the kids there are at least 50 adults watching everything I do, and half of them have cell phones. If I did anything improper I'd be in handcuffs before the next pitch. Nevertheless, I had to submit to a criminal check.

OK a bit off topic here so I apologize in the first place.......

Everyone wants a criminal to pay for what they have done. Send the jerk to prison. Now he gets out:

    1. He cant find a place to live. They do a criminal background check.
    2. He cant get a job. They do a criminal background check.
    3. He cant participate in his children's church activities. They do a criminal background check.
    4. He cant participate in his children's schools lives because they do a criminal background check.

And then eveyone wonders why they end up back in prison. They are not allowed to succeed when they get out!!!!!

How do you handle the situation where an immature 18 yr old boy did something stupid. He served a couple years. He rebuilds his life. He gets a job, marries, has kids. 22 yrs later he is laid off. He cant get another job because of his crime at 18. He used to be able to teach the children in Sunday School. Everyone at the church knew him well. But once the insurance company insisted on criminal background checks, he was no longer allowed to participate.

I don't have the answer. Just pointing out that the results are not always justifiable.

More than likely, the form you got was a generic one supplied by the firm they contracted with to do the checking.

The criminal check - yes, but I would corner him about the validity of checking credit.

Child abuse is such a serious issue, many schools are doing criminal background checks to not only protect the kids, but cover their own necks against lawsuits, if something should happen.

Section 613 of the FCRA specifies the limitations on what can be included in a report.
