I'm currently job-hunting (fed govt) and wondering whether my past credit probs (BK) will prevent me from getting hired. Everything else is squeaky clean, as far as background check, etc.

Anyone have any insight on this? thanks!

Credit reports reflect (directly and indirectly) two things: character, and susceptibility to blackmail, bribery, etc. Even a clean report with high utilization can raise a red flag for the latter. As to the former, the real problem comes if they find something you haven't disclosed. Bankruptcy could be a problem, depending on the circumstances. Certainly it will be reason to ask deeper questions. But if the answers are satisfactory (some unexpected personal reverse, versus just going out and partying on plastic) you should be fine.

Is this an accounting or auditing position?

DH has Top Secret. They looked at the CR and asked for explanation. Tell the truth. Our case is an ex-wife w/ 40k debt that he inherited during divorce.

Prior to filing BK 4 yrs ago, we went to the legal office on base to speak with an attorney about the clearance and BK. They need to know that we did everything possible (payment plans etc...) before BK and BK was a final step. Attny told us that DH's command didn't have to be informed either. The only time it was questioned was with the 10 yr security clearance renewel.

BTW, I am going through a security check now, although not as thorough as a top secret, I don't worry about it.
