Hi All- A little background- I am currently interviewing for a job with the federal government. This job requires a security clearance and a credit check will be involved. I recently pulled my annualcreditreport.com reports and my credit is pretty decent. Only one negative report, and that was from 6 years ago for a 30 day past due on a CC. No real biggie I dont think. I paid for one score and I came in at 690. Not stellar, but not bad either. Yesterday I got a message from a house that I havent lived in for over 7 years that a woman apparently had been calling, and it sounded like a CA. They were nice enough to take the information and pass it along. I called the number, and apparently I am in collections for a Verizon wireless phone bill for in the neighborhood of $150. I vehemently dispute the legitimacy of this bill (it was a month to month plan that had been terminated, long after the original contract had expired), but the CA agent said that I have had ample time to dispute the debt as they had been trying to mail and phone me (at the wrong address and number mind you) for more than 30 days. I am terribly scared that this will end up costing me a job if this item gets put on my credit report before it is checked for my clearance. I think I left the conversation with the CA as requesting a validation, but Im not so sure. I was foolish enough to call the number before doing my homework as I just wanted to find out what this was all about, so I wasnt terribly familiar with the term at the time. At the end of the call, the CA said "my supervisor has just informed me that this will hit your credit report in the next few days". My understanding is that if this is in validation (which I believe it should be as this was my first contact) then they can not report the item to a credit bureau. Having this stay off my report is by FAR the most important thing to me at the moment. Is there anything that can or should be done? Call back and ask for pay for delete? Try the same with Verizon? Sign up with trucredit and monitor daily and file dispute as soon as I see a negative blip? Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
If you paid for a reports at freecreditreport, I would not even worry about that.Thats probbaly not your true fico score. If you want to know that go to myfico.com and pay for your trans and EQ score. Will cost you $40 but you will know for sure what your at.Transunion truecredit says my Equfax score is a 621 & fico has me at a 658,it says my trans is a 611 and fico has me at a 580.Cant go buy those vanity scores.
