Does anyone understand exactly what a "Credit Bureau" is?

From my observation, they are not just another CA - but somewhere in between a CA and a CRA. My local one seems to be mainly affiliated with EQ. However, it seems they report to TU randomly, but not EX at all. They also do collections, but I cannot figure out if they actually buy accounts, or just try to do collections for others.

I am getting ready to have to go up against mine, and want to know what kind of animal I am dealing with.

A credit bureau is a Credit Reporting Agency.

It sounds like you received a collection notice from a CA that has the words "credit bureau" in their business name, which could very well be a violation of the FCRA.

This is definately "Credit Bureau of 'MyTown, USA'" They are definately trying to collect for a local medical bill. They seem to be a hybrid CRA/CA in this case.

Can anyone explain this Business Model?

Our's used to be the same. I don't know which bureau they were affiliated with, but they dealt in collections too. 2 years ago they dropped the "Credit Bureau" moniker. I believe someone posted once before that all "Credit Bureau of XXXX" were owned by TU.
