curious... I got a call from MBNA offering me the Platinum Plus AAA visa card today. Although I'm always leary about these phone calls, I knew it was legit cause I had received info on the card by mail a few days earlier.. She said all I need to do was answer a few questions. Anyhoo, she had most of my info from AAA membership, but she asked if I wanted to give my SS#... I declined and she said that is fine. Question: how are they going to do anything with my application if they do not have my SS#? Can they check my credit report? Just curious.

Well, sounds like if you are getting pre approved stuff, that they already have your info, since most of the time they do soft inqs to pre-select possible customers. Because you agreed to do the app and even if you didnt give her your ss#, I bet they will still pull your cr.

    Just my 2 bits.

SS# NOT REQUIRED TO PULL A CREDIT REPORT!!!

It just helps prevent errors...like MARY J SMITH and MARK J SMITH sometimes apply for stuff as M. J. SMITH...the SS# would be use to confirm who is who...or in the case of MARK J SMITH JR, MARK J SMITH SR and if there is a MARK J SMITH III...(REALLY IMPORTANT IF THEY ALL LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE)

george is right.. I know firsthand of someone who used a bogus SSN but their real name and address while applying online for a CC (yes, illegal). They were able to pull his real CR still.

WOW... I had no idea. Doesn't this just leave the CC companies open for non-permissible purpose lawsuits? They just repeated the info to me that they were entering into the application and I said "uh-hu" and "yes"-- never had to tell them anything specific. I mean this could have been anyone, right?

When i did telemarketing for AmEx they told us if the customer declines SSN that they would call later or send a letter asking for it...
