Verified by VISA is a security enhancement program that was started in November 2001. It only affects transactions made on the Internet.

With this system, you have a password attached to your credit card. The merchant then has to verify your password before the transaction can proceed. This would prevent a thief from using your card to make online purchases even if they had physical possession of your card.

I was just wondering if anyone had used this service and what the results were?

It seems to be available only with cards issued by the following:
    First USA
    SouthTrust
    SunTrust
    US Bank

Unfortunately I don't have any cards from these institutions.

From here you can see if the VISA cards you have can be password protected.

Yes, you can add passwords onto your accounts also as a security enhancement even for the purpose of accessing and/or making significant changes to the account.

Eg: My Cap1 accounts all have passwords. If I call up to speak with a rep, I have to give a password. That way nobody can call and change my address... then later order another card and charge on my account.

I also have passwords on my checking and savings accounts (different banks). Call each of your credit cards and banks and ask to have a password added.

the only card I have that couldn't do it at the time was the Target Guest card (you could do it, but only if fraud had actually already occurred, then they close the current account and give you a password and a new account). I suggested this was in need of change.

I have a password on my BankofAmerica Visa Card. If you try to use the card online, you will be asked for a password. Authorization cannot be granted without this password, which I think utilizes some kind of web services under the hood and authenticates against VISA database.

That sounds great. Have you had any problems using the card online?

Has anyone herd of similar services for Amex or MasterCard?
