Someone stole my credit card and ran up a $4,000 bill in one day. The company contacted me and immediately cancelled the card once I told them i was not making the charges. The company told me I can have these charges removed but I have to send in some paperwork. Here is my problem...the paperwork asks for my SS number and I dont have one. Is there anything I can do? I afraid I will have to pay the $4000.
Is this a CC account you opened, or was one opened by id theft in your name? How did you open the credit card account? What SSN did you use on the application?
I have no idea what SS# was used on the application. I am not a resident, needed a CC and a relative helped me with the application. This was almost 10 years ago. I have never had a problem and intend on paying the money if I have to. I am afraid the CC company will report me...is there anything I can do? Or should I just set up a payment schedule with them to pay of the charges?
If you sign the application and the SSN does not belong to you. They can come after you for fraud. If I was you I would pay the debt ASAP and closed the account. If you have applied for other credit under the same SSN you have other problems. Most people from other countries will buy a SSN on the street for five bucks. You have a second choice run for the border.
Talk to whatever relative initially helped you get the card and spend a few hundred with an immigration attorney. That immigration attorney might not be able to advise you on this type of problem, but he will have the number of someone that will. You have attorney-client privileges with the lawyer. I have a friend that is not a US citizen, but he has a secured credit card for several grand. He is in the country legally on a business visa. I don't know where you are located, but your other immigrant friends are good resources. I lived in Mexico for a couple of years and the advice I needed was from Americans and Canadians, as they were in the same boat as myself. Locals were not helpful as they were not in my shoes. I am not a lawyer and the above information is not legal advice.
