I'm a student and applied for the Citibank mtvU credit card. I gave them my PO box as my address and could not pass the address verification since I don't get any bills at that address. I can't put my home address because my family is temporarily residing somewhere else for about a year, and I can't go back home to check my mail. Would they have checked my address if I put my dorm address where I can check mail? Is there a credit card company that does not verify the addresses of applicants? Thanks for all your help.
Put your home or dorm address as your main address (shouldn't really matter which one), but use your PO Box as your mailing address. That's what I've always done, and I've never had any issues with address verification. Some credit issuers just don't like you to use PO Box addresses, but all credit issuers will want to verify your address as part of the application process to try and make sure you are who you say you are.
Which credit card companies let you use a bank statement as address verification? Citibank required a home phone/gas/electric/water bill, but I don't pay for those things separately from my dorm fee.
It seems strange that Citi would require that for a student card. A lot of students live in dorms and don't pay gas or electric bills separately. Are you 100% sure they won't accept a bank statement?
That's weird, you should have tried to talk to their supervisor to clear the case. It is understable that a student is residing in a dormitory.
Hi Joshua, I agree with you. Yes address verification is a must for credit card companies. they do this for their security and to check that you are genuine or not
I can understand their refusal to accept a P.O. box as the billing address if you don't receive utility bills there, however they should accept your dormitory address, even though you don't pay utilities in your name there. This is, of course, a student credit card, and it is fairly common for college students to live in a dormitory, rent a room in a house, or share a house/apartment with friends--all of which would result in not having the utilities in the student's name. Also, there are many apartment complexes which include the utilites in the rent. Is Citibank really taking the position that people who live in these apartments are disqualified from receiving credit simply because they can't produce a utility bill with their name on it? I think you should try again, this time giving the dormitory address, and if you are still denied for this "address verification" reason then you should contact a supervisor and complain.
