I just completed a phone interview for a position that I am really interested in. They need to do a credit check to determine my elgibility for employment which I think is understandable - they deal with finances. The company is based out of state and they want me to email them a form to check my credit. Plus, I have to admit I'm real anal about my credit and I have heard that a hard inquiry can take a couple points off your score. To have a credit check done when I'm just a potential candidate seems a little odd to me. I would still need to go through two more sets of interviews. I'm a little leary. Any thoughts?
Ask them which CRA they use, pull your own report and send them a copy - or the original. Explain your concern and if they are worried about being able to authenticate the CR, agree that when they make you an offer, they can pull your CR.
agree. they shouldn't be pulling your credit until after they offer the job, and you accept it. it can be a condition of employment, if your credit is not up to their standard, but by knowing your credit before they offer you a job, would that be discrimination? Since you are not being evaluated solely on your merits? There really is no way to get out of credit checks these days, especially in the finance world. I am in the same situation, and my employer will check my credit every year to two years, and it is a condition of my employment.
AS IN POOR CREDIT CAUSING ACCIDENTS...CLAIMS...TICKETS... DOES POOR CREDIT CAUSE AN OTHER-WISE GOOD EMPLOYEE TO BE A BAD EMPLOYEE???
In this case, my opinion is yes. If you are working in the finance industry, its important to have the ability to manage money well. If you cannot manage your own finances, why could you manage others?
Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview ASSUMING NOT RELATED TO POOR MONEY MANAGEMENT... ...AND WHAT IS CONSIDERED POOR CREDIT??? I HAVE BEEN DENIED MORE TIMES THAN I CARE TO SAY...AND I DON'T HAVE ANY "BADDIES" AND NEVER HAVE!!!
Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview I have worked for a couple of banks in the IT department but they always pulled it before they hired along with an FBI report.
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview Yeah, or they did a NAC report, National Agency Check. I don't know if that's available outside govt agencies for possible employment purporses, but it's a just a general check with all the major govt agencies to see if the person pops up somewhere in their "baddie" files. Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview And what about victims of identity theft who have bad marks on their CRs and don't know it??
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview Banks do a fingerprint check through the NCIC - the National Crime Information Center. The big kahuna of big brother databases - or a.k.a. the Feds.
Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview When handling the boss' money and you are about to lose your home to foreclosure, your car to repossession and your freedom becuase you are about to be jailed for not paying child support you represent a serious embezzlement risk. George, there are some positions where a credit check pre-employment is a valid tool to check qualifications for the position. Would YOU, as the owner of a Credit Counseling Service, hire someone as a Credit Counselor who happens to be a client of yours? If that candidate can't handle his/her own finances, how confident would you be that they could do the job of handling clients' finances?
Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview I agree with Flyingifr. In jobs where you have access to money, they definitely want a credit check. But (at least according to TransUnion), an employment check is not counted as a hard inquiry. If you apply for a securities license, they'll also run your fingerprints and "FBI Report." This report checks for criminal records. Same logic as the credit check--if you're dealing with money or securities, they want to make sure that you don't have a record and that you have acceptable credit. I know a bankruptcy will normally disqualify you from getting a securities license, but I'm not sure of the time frame.
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview **YOU ARE GOING TO BELIEVE TRANS UNION??? A HARD IS A HARD!!!
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview This is the quote. Perhaps others can verify whether FICO considers it a hard or a soft: Soft inquiries do not impact your credit standing-they occur when your credit report is checked by you, a prospective employer, or for the purpose of pre-selected credit card offers. This sounds to me like employment related pulls are softs. I don't have one that's still on my reports, so I can't check. If I find one of my old reports I'll look, but I think it may have been a soft. Anyone have any employment pulls on their report? If so, is it a hard or a soft?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview "IF" it is coded as AR or AM or PRM or some other "SOFT" code...
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview Both banks I worked for took fingerprints on my first day. Once in awhile someone would start work and couple of weeks later the security guards would be escorting them out of the building ... guess those fingerprints found something. To work for a bank you should be screened
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview The problem is its not just jobs that deal with money that run Credit checks. I have had credit checks from the bus comppany to phone jobs. I did a TCIC NCIC check on myself and wouldnt you know my name matches some criminals.
Re: Re: Re: Credit check before a job interview No matter what sector your working in, just about every employer asks permission to check your credit, and they WILL check your credit for sure if your up for a promotion to middle or upper management. I have seen this many many times.
