anybody have any experience with credit repair services?

    Do they work?

Do they do anything that I couldn't do?

The process of repairing your credit is daunting - wouldn't i be smart to find someone who knows what they're doing and how to do it?

What are the drawbacks? What are reasonable fees? Am I better off fumbling through the process on my own?

Any info you all could give would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Hi Ben, I have done it both ways. I used 2 different services, both of them were ineffective at best. I used the Law office of Jack Schrold and Lexington Law firm.

I started the journey on my own. Within a few months I had found creditnet. Then I was well on my way. I worked at it diligently for both myself and my husband for probably a year. I had excellent results. By this time, I wanted a 100% clean report. I turned over the remaining issues to Lexington. I had disputes running at the time. I got a few deletions off of those last disputes. Lexington reported those deletions as theirs. So, they always showed that they got 4 deletions in the first month. They didn't, I did! As I recall, I think they got 1 or 2 that I hadn't been able to get removed. Schrold did the same thing--took credit for my work and got 1 or 2 on their own. I ended up paying a lot for those 2 deletions!

    Points to consider:
    1. By the time I turned it over to them, I probably knew as much as they did. I had really learned AlOT. It was hard for me to let complete control of my file go.
    2. I could have gotten those items deleted myself if I had stuck to the tried and true process (read the stickies on the first page for new people "doc's credit primer is excellent!). I just fell for their marketing.

Well, a credit service organization cannot do anything that you could do by yourself. With that said, some firms do have contacts within certain furnishers of information which facilitates deletions that the average consumer would not obtain otherwise. It's kind of like fixing a sink . . . sure, you can do it yourself and if you have the time and effort to learn, go for it. However, this is simply not feasible for all persons. In some cases, people actually make bigger messes than they had before the disputed anything because they just don't know what they're doing. Now, if you have some time and willingness to learn, go at it yourself but, be forewarned that it is time consuming, tedious, and frustrating.

If you hire someone know that different firms have different angles but, by and large, you should focus your interests to agencies which have in-house counsel, have graduated from law school or are simply ran by attorneys. I don't mean the Lexington Law types rather, an agency which has the above actually assess your reports and then compose drafts which pinpoint the inaccurate or incomplete data fields. Just because an agency has "Law" at the end of their title doesn't mean anything. Call them up and see what there structure is like.

Furthermore, it is imperative that you find a company which is a Better Business Bureau member. In this field, scams are the norm so due diligence is required. At bare minimum, make sure the entity is licensed, registered, and if required, bonded. Don't even consider anyone who isn't because they are not legitimate.
