Hello All, I pulled my credit report(s) and there is an account listed under Wash Mutual/Providian for $750. It says it was opened in 7/2007 and is current. Now I know I applied for several credit cards in 2007 but I never received this one. How should I proceed in finding out what the deal is with this? I don't remember receiving a credit card and I never received any communications from Wash Mutual/Providian. Thanks!
Since it's not in collections, dispute it with the CRAs. I recommend using their online forms. If they validate it, send a CMRR disputing it again and asking for documentation supporting claim of their validation. Then, if it turns out that WaMu really did open up a line of credit, it's up to you to decide what you want to do. If you don't need the card, just ask them to close it. I'd also point out that you never sent back a signed agreement or were ever sent a card, and (politely) ask them to remove it from your report.
Might be that Wamu sent out a pre-approval thing - these were sent out by the truck/plane loads, got lost in the mail/or misdelivered and someone found it and applied in your name, and changed your address. Obviously this person is paying regularly and on time otherwise it would be a negative item and not a positive/current item. But I would still call WAMU.
I am going to call Providian today. I thought it strange though that it did not state the minimum payment amount on my credit report or the outstanding balance. But the account was in good standing, in fact it may even be helping my credit lol.
If you have never applied for/received the card, and never received a bill how do you plan to mention an account #? Remember those CSRs are in India. Their intelligence levels begin and end with account numbers.
I have no idea, that's why I am here. I am not sure how I should proceed. When I contact them, what do I say? Because the account number isn't listed on any of my credit reports, not even the last 4 digits.
Give them your social security number. Or, go buy a Trans Union report straight from Trans Union. They don't redact account numbers.
Actually I called them and it turns out that they sent me a card last year. I never received it. So I told them to send it to me. I will check out the terms and if I find it resonable I will activate it. So maybe this is a good thing. Thanks for everyones help!
Validate, prove, research, whatever word you want to use. The point is the same. They will remove the TL if the account doesn't actually exist. My current credit card company had three TLs on my report, and disputing with the CRA got two of them removed. Then, as I suggested, the OP should contact Providian / WaMu to find out what happened.
