As far as the zero balances giving a lower score than low balances, that actually makes sense. If you have no balances, you are not showing that you are able to handle credit. This happened to a neighbor when I was growing up. He always paid cash for everything. Then one time he decided to finance a car. He got turned down because he didn't have a credit history. When he protested, saying didn't the fact that he always paid cash for whatever he needed mean anything, the banker told him that it didn't. All that means is that he'll spend the money in his pocket to pay for whatever he wants. There is no proof that he is able to make a payment every month.
