I just read in a credit repair book that you should never deal directly with the creditor to get something off your credit report because the creditor is not subject to the FCRA-only the CRA. This is news to me. Can you verify that?

No that is twisted information. The OC IS bound 100% by the FCRA. They are NOT bound by the FDCPA. CA's or 3rd party collectors are bound by the FDCPA.

You CAN (and I recommend you do) deal with OC's whenever and wherever possible.

Creditors are also covered in the FCRA as furnishers of information. see: § 623. Responsibilities of furnishers of information to consumer reporting agencies [15 U.S.C. § 1681s-2]
