From the front page of Chase's Currency To Go order site: "Due to an emergency situation in New York City the Currency To Go service has been suspended until further notice. We hope to resume the service as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience. If you have a question about an existing order, please call 1-888-CHASE-84 and the representative will assist you."
Chase manhattan plaza buildings are a couple of blocks from "ground zero". I don't think that is the reason.
Some of the nearby buildings have been evacuated pending the conclusion of the surrounding cleanup and investigation. Also the fire marshalls need to declare those buildings officially structurally sound. So one of Chase's offices that handles that processing may well have been affected. Case in point is the notice on AMEX's site to their employees stating that while their building was a couple of blocks from the twin towers, it is now closed for several months, pending further notification. Lastly, Chase guaranteed next day air service. It may well be that they simply can't guarantee that right now given the current backlash of airline layoffs and closures. All of the above are just "guestimates", of course.
Not to sound insensitive to what happened on sept 11. But I do hope that Chase will be able to resume the currency to go very soon.
Nobody thinks you're insensitive Leo. We're all numb and saddened by the tragic events of 9.11. But we all are trying to hold our lives together, as well. It's the will to survive and thrive.
Thanks for the info. Hope, Breeze. Any other banks offer the same without fees? I know you can accomplish the same online through Amex but they charge fees. They also restrict you to once every 14 days I believe.
I did a pretty thorough Google search - no luck. I wish! There are some without fees, but you must convert to another currency, the option of US dollars for US dollars isn't in their selection menu.
Thanks Breeze. I'm kind of surprised Chase is the only one out there. Go figure. I am sure they will be back up soon.
I checked the site again this morning: "Due to the World Trade Center disaster, we are not accepting new orders for Currency-To-Go. If you would like to purchase foreign currency at one of our branches in NY, NJ, CT or TX, please call 1-888-CHASE-84 and a customer service representative will help you find a convenient branch." Wow!
