Dangers of disputing

I found this on the Family Finances board at parentsplace.com:

A warning on disputing things (because this is what they want you to do): If you dispute too many things, the credit bureau can refuse to dispute anything else. So, one day you might have a legitimate dispute, and they might not take it. Another thing is that when other creditors see too many disputed items, it looks bad. Another things is that you could be opening a can of worms for anything that remains unpaid. They might have been trying to locate you for collection, and you'll throw them something to bite on - and it could all backfire.....cuz they can come collecting w/ a vengence if it close to the statute of limitations.

IS THIS TRUE??? I'm relatively new to disputing. I noticed that several days ago (haven't tried lately) that EQ would not let me start an online dispute. Will the disputes look bad to a potential creditor?? I know EX has when something was dispute and validated on the report..so I'm wondering how this will look to a creditor. I'm only worried about obtaining a mortgage. Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't say this is true. I have always disputed many things at a time with no problems. If it's legitimate then they cannot refuse to investigate, they have to by law or will have to suffer legal consequences. IMHO, those general boards give credit bureau advice. They reiterate what credit bureaus have told them. I'm not saying that people haven't experienced that very situation but it just isn't true in my case. I would say that you should go with what feels right. Sometimes I just dispute 1 per day, other times, I dispute 10. This is the best board to get real concrete info and life experiences to go by. What works for some may not work for others but remember you have the law on your side. We have some true credit warriors among us who have taken the credit bureaus to court for not following the law.

As far as creditors looking for you. If they haven't been, they may not start. Since I've started my credit journey, not one creditor has sent a letter demanding anything much less a phone call. Make sure that you keep good records of everything and records of your records. If they try and pull a fast one, take them to court.

An account looks better to be in dispute than to have that negative mark just sitting there. Don't worry about that.

If they won't let you dispute online, then call or write them and be persistent. I apologize, I know that my answer is a little choppy but it's late. Just remember that you are in the driver's seat and there are people here to help you. Do a search on different topics because guaranteed, someone has given good advice pertaining to your problems somewhere in the archives. ;-)

    Hope this helps.

    NO.

They can label a dispute as frivolous but not a person.

You can always request verification from the CRA and validation from the creditor on any debt that is on your report and they must comply until such proof is given or the account is deleted/updated.

Yes George, 20 in one dispute "round" does sound a bit frivolous...STILL they did NOT prevent you from disputing those "remaining" items later? Correct?

It is also a great place to be mocked simply because the mockers do not agree with something you post.
I admit one has a right to disagree with a post but ridiculing the poster is totally out of line. It's childish and has no place here.Such activities taint the image of the board & impedes the effectiveness of doing battle against the injustices wrought on folks by the Credit Industry?

Read the FTC website where they have the FCRA and the Fdcpa. That is the Law regardless of what anyone says it's there in black and white.

I agree this is the best board for credit info. Actually this is the only discussion board I have ever utilized after using the internet since '95! Everything that you need is here and ask a question if you not sure.

Anything can happen, people have asked for validation and received it. Meaning all of the receipts, original signed app and all statements. It's rare but it does happen. Anything can happen but the collection agencies and original creditors are notorious for keeping bad records or none at all.

So, luck is on you side usually.

It's up to you to decide what to dispute and how many. You are in control and no one else. Other people only have opinions.......You make the decision!

The other thing to be aware of is that sometimes if you dispute something in a listing, they will delete the WHOLE listing and not correct it, which is frustrating if you don't have too much good credit on your report.

The real danger is in not desputing - you have nothing to lose and you make the CRA actually do some work for a change.

We bought our home last year

When the mortgage company looked at the credit reports they mentioned that the creditors were currently reporting. We had some collection accounts with recent updates due to the disputes we had sent. These accounts were really dormant accounts but were verified disputes which changed the reported as of dates. It didn't stop us from getting the house, and nothing more was said about it.

    Good luck to you

    May you get many deletions!

I'm still disputing STUFF...BUT had a MAJOR set-back when all I did was expect the credit limit instead of N/A on EXPERIAN (AMEX BLUE)...they removed the WHOLE ACCOUNT!!!

In cases like this where a investigation request to update info turns into a deletion, wouldn't the account reappear when the Creditor sends in their monthly updates? ...or is it lost forever, unless you request a reinsertion yourself?

    ...such an atrocity...

Only derog. accounts would appear the following months updates, good account don't.

    How nice, right? :)

I don't understand what you mean? I mean creditors report positive info every month (as balance goes down). So do the cra's just ignore the updated info once the acct has been deleted?? I'm sorry if this is a silly question. I'm just confused because I had an acct simply vanish from my reports and I'm wondering if the creditor (universal) will ever start to report it again....

If a CRA does a hard delete on an account, then it's gone. Now, if that account happened to be a good account, and the consumer wants it back, the monthly tape updates the OC's sent the CRA's won't bring it back. The OC needs to do something else (can't recall what it is at the moment, maybe someone can chime in here), otherwise, countless monthly tape updates will get nowhere.

Remember that Credit Reporting Agencies are in the business of reporting true and accurate information. The entire business is based on the integrity of their reports. If that integrity seems to be off, it hurts their business. They are in the business of reporting this information not investigating this information. There need to make it difficult for the conumer is something that they do to keep the disputes down (by saying they are frivolous) and keeping the consumer stupid. These CRAs are ran by a bunch $8 an hour employees who could care less about you or your individual situation. The bottom line is their profit margin not your credit report and how it should appear, but reporting information that they stand behind because there customers say it is true. It is a real catch 22 if you ask me. Their bias is obvious in how they treat the consumer in comparision to the paying customer (collectors, collection agencies etc..)...

    Ng,
TU did that to my Macy's acct too. I opened the acct in 1994 and used it once. Recently, I decided to close it. First they put some consumer statement in and left it open. Then when I disputed again they deleted the acct. Why couldn't they just contact Macy's??? The other bureaus did with no problem....
