After 8 months of being unemployed I've started getting calls from collection agencies. 2 settled for less than what was owing, the third is out for blood. Acct. was only $2300, but has grown to $6300. I offered to pay $1500 by the end of the month (money from a relative) but they want $3000 within the next two weeks. This isn't a settlement amount, it's just to stop interest! How do they expect to get this amount out of someone who's not working. How should I handle this. They didn't want to accept the $1500. Any suggestions?

The first step in dealing with any CA, even before agreeing to pay an account that you know you have had, is to request validation. BECAUSE, you never know when the company, CA, or any other third party has added something to the balance that they are not entitled to under the law.
