Could someone help me get a debt that isn't mine off of my report?

I live in Minnesota and have been receiving requests from a company called Gulf States Credit (GSC) to pay $140 for an old debt to Pacific Bell. I have never had an account or any business dealings with Pacific Bell.

I sent GSC a letter telling them the bill wasn't mine. They responded with a letter thanking me for agreeing to pay them! Then the sent a letter thanking me for the payment!

I now find the debt is on my Equifax report as "over 90 days". I ask Equifax to investigate this and they agreed.

I have been cautioned on another credit site not to expect much from Equifax. They (the other site) also offered some advice, but it was difficult to follow and my further questions weren't answered. I should add I don't even know the account number because it was partially blanked out on my credit report.

Can anyone here offer me advice? Thanks in advance for your help.

I never had a problem with Gulf State Credit. They did the same thing to me. They said I opened up an ATT broadband account last year, which I never did. I disputed with EXP as not mine, and it came right off. They sent me a letter stating the account was closed, sorry for any inconvience.

I would also be contacting the OC telling them it's not your debt.
