Okay, I got stiffed pretty bad here... I am applying for a mortgage loan to build a new house and thought everything was going good, until SBC showed up on my credit report with a delinquency of $1500. from 1998. OUCH. Turns out I used to share an apartment with 2 other people and the bill was in all of our names (dumb decision.) Well, come to find out, one of the roommates who is in them military and now oversees continued to use a calling card to make long distance calls without our knowledge as we thought the phone had been turned off when we moved out. Now for the question, I need to get this loan approved as this is a new build and they need a loan approval letter, does anyone think if I call SBC and offer them $800. to consider this done and over with that they will accept and put the issue in the past? Anyone have any other time expedient suggestions? Any help would be great. I figure I can go after the deadbeat roommate in small claims court once I get this resolved. Does anyone have any personal experience dealing with SBC and know how they operate?

THEY HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS DEAL???

"THEY" allowed $800 of charges on a CLOSED PHONE ACCOUNT???

I would offer them $1.97 and tell them THEY (SBC) were the RESPONSIBLE PARTY for allowing $800 to be charged on the CLOSED ACCOUNT!!!

"IF" this was a CLOSED CREDIT CARD account and you received A LETTER CONFIRMING THAT...but they just let somebody (NOT YOU) charge on it...WOULD THEY REALLY THINK YOU WOULD PAY???

Actually they allowed $1500. in charges to be racked up. It is kind of complicating and confusing to me, I disputed it and all I got back was a letter saying, "We have reviewed your debt and found it to be valid." That is it, no invoice breaking down the calls made, no past bills showing the charges, nothing, just a letter saying the found it to be valid. What should be my next step? This is the first time I have ever had to go through anything like this...

Is this a collection agency or SWB you are dealing with?

Well it was with a collection agency name RMA in Illinois, I disputed with them and wanted proof of the debt, well they sent me a letter saying they were returning the debt to SBC, well 3 weeks later I get a letter from SBC saying the debt is valid. Now some collection agency in California has it named Money Control Inc. anyone heard of these folks?

This worked for me when I closed on my home.

I had an old $1200 debt from GE Capitol (JC Penny).

I told them I would bring a cashier's check for the $1200 to closing. I brought the check to closing.

I placed a yellow sticky on the check with the address JC penny wanted the check mailed to.

What the lady at closing did not know is the address to mail the check to was actually my PO box.

I close on my home, and 4 days later got the check back. Took it back to the bank and told them it turns out I did not need it.

6 months later the negative TL hit SOL and vanished from my reports.
