I just read your response to "A newbie looking for direction". I knew there was a reason I forgot to mail my letter to Cap 1 yesterday, I mailed everything except that. Anyhow, I'll explain. The Cap1 card was a paid charge off account in 2000. I have tried everything to get it removed, they are not going to budge on this. They now have it listed as paid charge-off, zero balance. I agree with you, I want to pay what I owe. After reading your response to the newbie question, and I am also a newbie, I've only been at this for three months, your letter made a lot of since. Should I mail the letter to the person who has responded to my letters at Cap 1, or another address, the one listed on my reports? This route of thinking seems to be a better way to deal with the Charge-off.
premeno, My best guess would be to send your letter to someone at Cap1 other than a person you've already been dealing with. If they're already not helping you, they probably already know your story and it doesn't matter to them. I know many on this board have had great success with Cap1 by sending letters through planetfeedback. It seems that from what I remember though, most of the successes are regarding getting increased credit lines or lowered APRs. So I'm not sure if planetfeedback and an appeal to the infamous Mr Cooke would be the best tactic here. I'm sure if there are folks who've had success this way, they'll jump in. The great thing about creditnet is that there are lots of tactics available for getting to the same place. Not everything works under all circumstances, like you've seen, sometimes you have to fall back and punt and then try again from a new position. Each creditor is different. My recommendation would be to do a search on the board for "goodwill" and "cap" and see if there is a name, fax number, address that you can find from someone who has been successful in getting a goodwill adjustment from Cap1. If that is unsuccessful, try a post with a subject of something like "Cap 1 Goodwill Adj Contact Info?". I honestly don't remember where I got the fax number and department for Citi when I sent our letter. I'm sure it came from somewhere on this board though. And don't hesitate to bump your post a few times if you need to to get the answer you need. I'm sure it will help some other folks too. Hope this helps a bit. All the best! DemPooches
Thanks for your reply. I have read on several sites that Cap1 and Providian always validate, which they did in my case. They were willing to change the previous listing of charge off past due XXXto paid charge off zero balance. But that is all I think they will do. Charge offs look so bad too, so this may be the way to go. I have legitiment reasons for not being able to deal with the credit cards before they were charged off. I had two surgeries and physical therapy. Money was real tight, especially since I had to stop working altogether. Anyhow, the person that sent the letter and statements from Cap 1 was very pleasant in her letter and closed with, "if I can assist you in anyway, let me know". But the letter came after I filed a complaint too, so I don't know. I'll look up Cap1 and goodwill letters as you suggested. Thanks again, any help is appreciated.
