Denied by AMEX, can I call?

I applied for an AMEX Blue Cash on their website after Lending Tree said I qualified for an AMEX Blue (non-cash). I was denied and received a letter saying it was due to high utilization.

Utilization at that time was around 79% (right after Christmas). Right now, it's about 40% (about 8k on a 0% BT). My FICO is between 720-800 depending on which report.

My total credit line is about $19k on 4 cards. All of them are at 0 balance now except for the 8k BT'd. Can I call AMEX to get reconsidered? Will they let me apply for a regular AMEX Blue without pulling another hard inquiry? I paid the other 3 cards off before I applied but should've realized they didn't update my credit report DOH. I should've waited longer to apply...

call 1-800-641-2400 tomorrow, and tell them you believe you should've qualified for the card and would like supervisor reconsideration.

Absolutely. Call immediately and let them know the drop in utilization and you want to be reconsidered. Should approve right over the phone.

Thanks for the replies, I will give them a call. Do they pull another hard if I ask them to reconsider?

I have scores MUCH lower than yours (mid to upper 500's) and I just got the plain old awards green card in December. Because of my scores, this is a real victory for me just to get an AMEX card.

Anyway, here are the steps I took:

    1. Applied on the phone--was denied

    2. received letter of denial--said they used equifax

    3. got my equifax report online for free since I was denied

    4. Luckily I had a duplicate entry on my report, so I disputed that and one other item

    5. Both items were removed and equifax sent me an updated report

    6. I called AMEX and told them about the report (which equifax supposedly sent to them)--AMEX told me that they (CRA's) never really send them the updated reports as they say they do-- I was advised to fax a cover letter asking for reconsideration and an updated copy of my report.

    7. I faxed what was asked for, waited a week, called AMEX, and they gave me the card!!!!

The whole process took about 5 or 6 weeks, but I think my persistance paid off. Hope this helps.
