If you're denied by a bank for a credit card and they
pulled experian, can you use that denial to get
a free report for transunion or equifax, or would that
denial be applicable only to a free copy of credit report
    from experian?

Only from Experian (or any that has the new inquiry). Their system will see the inquiry from the bank and allow you the free report.

If you order your report they'll ask if you've been denied credit in the past 60 days. If you say yes, they don't even ask by who. The basically just see if you've had an inquiry in the past 60 days. If so, free report (because they wouldn't really know if you were turned down or not.)

I think you are really only supposed to get a free one from the CRA who supplied the report to the lender that turned you down. But, if you have any inquiries on the other reports you'll get one anyway.

Some states, you can get a free report once per year, regardless if you've been denied or not I believe georgia is one of those states.

I send all three a copy of the denial letter ! I have done this many many times over the years: I have always gotten a free report from each C.R.A.

You can use any excuse for a free report. This is the best. Tell them that you currently receive government aid and by federal law they are required to give you a free copy.

They never ask for proof and this causes no red flags in the system.
