I am going through a divorce and custody battle with my wife. I just pulled my EQ and saw that DSS did a hard inquiry on my credit. I pay child support and have never been behind. I don't think they have the right to pull it do they?

Apparently they can check in whenever they want-- at least this is what my husband was told. They do this for a few reasons: 1) locate addresses for you other than the one you gave them-- just in case you try to skip out. 2) look at employment reported-- just in case you are hiding "extra" income that they could consider for CS. 3) look for unusual activity-- again in case you are hiding income 4) they will always check in if you ask for a court date to modify your CS. 5) depending on the state, they may also be checking to see if they have reported your CS... some states report whether up-to-date or behind on payments, others only when you are in arrears.
Child support is very hard to fight on your credit report... they are essentially above the law.

I am on the phone with them right now. I have them bouncing around like you wouldn't believe. I mentioned lawsuit and they are clearly frazzled. I have NEVER BEEN BEHIND on child support. That is why this inquiry is bothering me. They will take it off or cough up a $1000. I could pay a few months of child support with that grand. :)
