I just got off the phone with Direct TV. Because I have a friend who works there I got a real sweet deal with free equipment and free installation. They even pay the tax!

They ask for a credit card; I was ready for that and give the the AMEX.

They ask for my social, which I just rattle off without thinking, thus proving that no matter how consumer aware you think you are, you can still make mistakes when caught off guard.

Then they ask if they can run a credit check! I said no. If there's a problem, my friend is pretty high up, so he can intercede. I don't really have a problem with them running a credit check, but my top negative reason on Experian is too many inquiries.

This whole inquiry thing really steams me. I want to change cell phone providers, but I probably won't just due to the inquiry. I don't see why inquires for cell phones and satellite tv counts for the same as a $10,000 credit card. All they're selling is ether, and if you don't pay they just cut you off with no real cash loss.

Thanks everybody, for letting me vent, I feel better now :)

What did they say about you not consenting to the credit check? I have heard others say that if you put it on a credit card, they will not run the credit report? I have Direct TV and am thinking about switching, but same goes here, I don't want the inquiry, plus my scores suck right now, mid-high 500's (I know.)

Once I said no, he just went on to the next item. It was no problem to set up the service with the credit card.

What ever happens, don't give out your social. They fashion the progression of questions so that you don't realize the implication until it's too late.

I have paid my directv bill by credit card but in order to get the new equitment and free installation they needed to do a soft inquirie on my CR.The reason why they do it is to determin a persons credit risk, and whether to require a security deposit on the account in case of contract breach. This is why they do it.No security deposit for me,everything is alright and i am enjoying satellite tv.It is alot cheaper then cable, and i have their total choice plus package.

Question, what can a creditor see on your report with a hard inquiry, that they can't see with a soft.

The difference between a hard, and a soft inquirie is that a "hard inquirie" shows that a person has applied for credit recently, and is noted on a persons credit report, therefore any creditor can see this. Now as far with a "soft inquirie"All this does is to give limited information like any lates, collections, any public records of some sort, any BK's or charged off accounts thefore no creditor can see this inquirie. This is known as a risk assessment,or a promotional type,or an AR "account review by a persons current lender, and other business that has a ligitiment business pupose of obtaing a perons credit report on making any offer or approving an account that is not credit related. Some insurance companies can do a soft one,and others could do a hard one,it all depends who you are dealing with.Risk of defaulting on any accounts is what any business is looking for including all creditors. If any creditor,or any compainies gets any adverse information from a soft then they will automactually do a hard inquirie to find out what it is.Then they will take action on what they found on a persons credit report.

I called DirecTV and finally the FTC and DirecTV removed the impermissible inquiry. Follow-up with your rights as a consumer.
