Does anyone out there have Directv? I am interested in getting a system but am worried about their credit standards. If anyone has this, please let me know what your experiences have been RE: approval standards, deposits, etc.

From their site (and Best Buy):

ACTIVATION OF PROGRAMMING MAY BE SUBJECT TO CREDIT APPROVAL AND REQUIRES VALID SERVICE ADDRESS, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND/OR VALID MAJOR CREDIT CARD.

I PAID UP-FRONT FOR THE WHOLE YEAR...THEN THEY SENT A REBATE CHECK FOR $300.00 (I THINK) TO COVER INSTALATION AND PART OF THE SERVICE YEAR...

Can you pay VISA/MC/AMEX/DISCOVERCARD for the WHOLE YEAR???

DIRECTV NEVER GOT MY SS#...BUT THEY DID AN "AR" ON TRANS UNION!!!

I CALLED THEM UP ASAP AND ASKED WHAT THEIR "PERMISSABLE PURPOSE" WAS SINCE I PAY BY CREDIT CARD BEFORE THE SERVICE IS RENDERED (DIRECT CREDIT CARD CHARGE)...

They must have put me on some "LIST"...I havn't had any AR'S since the first one a year or so ago...

They pulled a soft (AR) inquiry on my equifax about 2 months after I signed up. That's all.

The ONE "AR" was years AFTER I started the service...

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD DIRECT CHARGE BY CREDIT CARD FROM THE FIRST DAY THEY OFFERED IT...

    NiceGuy,

I just recently got DirecTV, a little more than six months ago. When you contact them they are going to ask for your SSN...don't give it to them and ask that they do not pull your CR. If you do not give them your SSN you will have to give them a credit card to bill each month. I did this and so far it has worked out well. They send you a bill each month showing a $0 balance and will bill your CCC the monthly charges on your statement date.

Unfortunately, in today's world one must have good credit to receive a bill in the mail. :(

Sounds like I will go the auto bill to CC route! Thanks for the advice, I won't give them my SS#!!!

Do they get upset when you refuse to give SS#? Has anyone ever been DENIED Directv??

    Thanks for all your replies!

As long as you give them a CC number they won't deny you. They do get antsy when you refuse to give them your SSN, but they get over it - because they want your business. :)

Thanks! What reason do you give for not providing SS, or do they even ask?

IF THEY REFUSE...OR SAY IT IS REQUIRED...TELL THEM OK...I WILL GO TO "DISH NETWORK!!!

F.Y.I. DIRECTV just bought DISH NETWORK...but all the details have not been worked out...

At this time they are still 2 seperate businesses...

They said any equipment (installation of dish or box) will be at DIRECTV'S expense...

I got worst of both worlds - they took my SSN and did a hard enquiry but still took my cc number and send me a zero bill every month....!

    DISPUTE IT!!!

"I did not apply for, or get a credit card or loan from DIRECTV...PLEASE REMOVE THE INQUIRY"

Certainly plan too. I also recently discovered that I had a "hard" from Progressive insurance, a company with whom I do not (and now will not) do business, for the "privilege" of asking them for an auto quote - will also be disputed.

A friend got TWO HARD inquires on Equifax two months ago. And he is using his Target Visa to pay for the service. Go figure!!.

Have him ask if they would like to credit his DIRECTV account with $1,000 or would they like to REMOVE both "HARDS"~~~NO PERMISSABLE PURPOSE...if they choose NEITHER...HE WILL SEE THEM IN COURT...and they will remove both "HARDS" and pay $1,000!!!

    NiceGuy,

I just told them that I did not feel comfortable giving out my SSN and that I would be willing to pay by credit card. The gentleman that took my call protested at first and then agreed.
