Just got a Discover card "invitation" (does not say you've been pre-approved, says you've been invited) and I'm sorta shocked. I'm 2.5 years post filing Ch7 and I assume they got this from a promo inq, although I don't see them listed yet. I didn't see them listed at all on NanaC's BK friendly thread, so I'd like to find out what people have experienced w/Discover. And I'm not sure if it's a card worth getting overall - any comments along those lines is appreciated.
I was surprised to not see it mentioned in NanaC's thread, but I only searched the most recent page. I figured they probably were BK adversed, but they also had my name. If I saw a promo inquiry, I'd be more encouraged. My fleeting moment of "wow, my scores have elevated my profile" is now over.
Actually, I've been turned down automatically for having ANY public records, not just BK's. I think that any public record (e.g. judgment) will throw a denial flag up with them. I have until 1/06 to get everything off, and then I might apply with them. I've heard good things and bad things about them, and I know that they are quick to sue.
I routinely get Discover "pre-approval" letters and applied once. I have Fair/Good credit with my FICO scores being in the mid/upper 600's. They promptly turned down my application for farily minor credit reasons. The one I can remember was a late payment that was several years old. So, my opinion is that they are fairly strict and their "pre-approved" letters are not a guarantee of a card.
After searching this board for Discover card, I am not impressed. I've been getting a steady stream of invitations to apply, but never a soft inq on my reports, so I figured it was just some random mailings. The card terms aren't all that great anyways.
I've been pretty happy with them. I just double the cashback for a rewards check at staples, etc. I always pay my bill off and send the payment online the day after the statement closes, so I've never had any problems.
I hate Discover but that's not why I left them off..actually, I think it was because no one ever applied because the consensus was that they were unfriendly to BK's and it was never attempted....I usually don't add to the list until someone has actually experienced a denial due to bk....
I don't know about 2.5 yrs post bk however I got a classic discover card about 11 yrs post bk and I included them in my chp 7 too. The info was off my credit report so that may have helped but I would think they would have records of anyone who filed against them.
I filed a Ch. 7 BK in April of 1995 and had everything discharged in August of 1995. Discover was one of my creditors when I filed (I owed them $3,200). A year ago, which would have been 8 years post-BK, they sent me an invitation to apply (which I did) but they rejected the application based upon my BK. The rejection letter didn't say it was because they were listed as a creditor when I filed in 1995. It was just your basic "Bankruptcy on file" rejection. Maybe someone has an 800# they could post here where you could call Discover before you even apply just to ask them about your BK concerns?
And your just going to accept that? Don't. If I always took no for an answer I'd still have Cross Country Bank and First Premier in my wallet. The inquiry is wasted, why not call and ask for reconsideration or write PFB and to executive offices. No guarantee the denial will get overturned, but it is always worth a try.
Yeh, I actually thought about fighting it, but I've got a Capital One card with an $8,000 limit at 9.9% and a Citibank Illumina card with a $6,500 limit at 8.9%, so I'm pretty much set. I was only trying to get the Discover card to do a balance transfer, but since the time I got rejected I've been able to pay off that balance completely. But I agree with you, it's always frustrating to get rejected, especially since I've been a responsible person financially for 9 years post-bankruptcy!
Discover would be a NO. I went through someones credit report that was around 5 years out of BK. The scores were in good shape and this person never had a Discover card. I asked them about the Discover hard inquiry and what happened. He said it was because of the BK and no other reason was listed. I really miss those free FICO EQ household reports. I got alot of good information from others by bringing it up and going through it.
