They just gave me an automatic increase of 1500 (from 7500 to 9000) on my Platinum card. I think it was because I didn't use the card for three months (I don't like UP TO 1% cash back, wish it was a full 1% back on all purchases). Looks like there are two good ways to get automatic limit increases from Discover: 1) make a large purchase and pay it off in full. 2) don't use the card for several months.
TELL ME ABOUT IT... I "COINED" the phrase..."DISCOVERCARD IT"...PUT CARD IN SOCK DRAWER... I got $4,000 increase and a 5.90% no fee BT...AFTER MONTHS OF NON-USE...$30,000+/YEAR I must try for a 9.99% or lower "GO-TO" rate before the 5.90% expires.
I wimped out. I let them pull a hard inquiry. Prior to that I got an automatic $300 increase on my anniversary date. This month alone I put over $2500 on the card and paid it off..well most of it. Maybe on my next anniversary date they will increase it higher than $300. Dani
I checked my records to see when I got my two big automatic increases. They were both right after I had charged up my account to within a few hundred dollars of the limit. First, in one month I charged it up from about $2000 to about $3100 ($3200 CL), then I got an increase. A few months later I was up to $4300 ($4700 CL) and I got another increase to $5700 CL. When I got close to that, they raised my interest rate instead, because I had become a bigger risk. So, I guess there's another way to get them to raise the limit, but I personally don't recommend my method (I was having munny trubbles, but bailing out your personal budget with credit is like bailing out a boat, only to dump your bailed water into the other side of the same boat. Not only are you still sinking, but you've wasted your effort, too.) It's a trap. A TRAP! -ingenue
I "MAXED OUT" my DISCOVERCARD many times in 6+ years...BUT I ALWAYS PAID IN FULL. I NEVER got an increase until I STOPPED USING THE CARD FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS...and finally "GOT HOOKED UP" with a phone number to a very helpful lady... +$4,000 5.90% BT NO FEE I will call her back to see if I can extend the BT, or increase the credit limit again, or lower the "GO-TO" rate to like 9.99% or lower...OR ALL THE ABOVE.
