Hi, I'm trying to make my husband, who's been AU on my Discover account for 2 years (the acct. is only 2 years old), a joint account member. I called Discover, they said we must fill out a form and they WILL run a credit check on him. The longest item on his report is the Discover AU (2+ years), the only other thing is a 7 mo. old store card. No lates, no maxing out, etc, but will he get the card in spite of his short credit history? We don't want to waste an inquiry if they're just going to deny him...thanks in advance!
Anyone? What does it take to get a Discover card? I was really hoping they would just change it to joint for me over the phone, not make us fill out forms and run a credit check... What do you guys recommend I do? Should I call again and see if I get a more agreeable service rep? Thanks!
As an AU he has all the privileges (he can charge) and all the perks (its on his credit report), without the liability for the debt. Curious why you want to add him as a joint?
The reason they need that is cause a joint holder is much different then an AU An authorized user is just that, authorized to use your credit line, etc... A joint holder is one jointly liable for the debt. Therefore credit is pulled to check credit worthiness, etc.... My question too would be why do you want him as a "joint" holder? It would make him liable unlike his AU status now.
Thanks for the responses, the reason we are trying to do this is that he has so little credit in his own name, just the Discover AU, a 7 mo. old store card, and I just added him to another credit card as AU, but that doesn't have a real long history either. Anyway, we'd like to get his score up to help us get a good mortgage in a couple months (or years, at this rate, lol) and I hear AUs don't count, so we thought going joint on our oldest card would be good. Any thoughts? Thanks!!!
Authorized users are acutally not reported on your credit report unless they have your social security number of the authorized user. I had an authorized user on my sears mastercard and they did not report on his credit report. until i made it a joint account, which they did ask for his social security and we did have to sign a form authorizing a change in the account did it report on his credit.
*Authorized users are acutally not reported on your credit report unless they have your social security number of the authorized user. HMMM...that is odd cause I am an AU on my husband's credit card and he is one on one of mine and we NEVER gave them SS#'s.
Turning him from AU to Joint wner won't legnthen his credit history any, so I don't see what you are trying to accomplish except to give Discover someone else to go after if things get bad. AU's do count in the FICO algorithm. Just look through these boards and you'll see dozens of posts from people who lost major FICO points when an account they were AU on went into collections.
