I've been having a problem with Discover. I don't know where to look for answers & hope someone here might have some ideas. I have a credit card balance with Discover that is being sent to a collection agency. The problem is the account is not delinquent. It was never delinquent at any time. A few late payments. Those were by a day or so. Never went 30 or more days late. The card was opened in 1993 jointly with my now ex-husband. We've been divorced around 10 yrs or so & he was to be removed from the card at that time. Calls were made to Discover, documentation sent. I am the primary account holder, his name did not show on the bills, no cards were issued to him. I continued making payments every month as I always have. End of story...or so I thought. In Feb. of this year, he filed bankruptcy. I received a letter from Discover saying they were closing the account because of it. Not happy but I don't use it either so no big deal. My ex-husband was removed from the account this past February. A few months ago I started getting calls and letters from a collection company trying to settle this account. I asked why and then told them that the account wasn't delinquent. The rep I spoke with looked at it & agreed, had a manager look at it. Then said they were closing it and sending it back. I also called Discover. They are not showing it as ever being delinquent and suggested I ignore the notices. Not comfortable with that. They went on to say it's an internal problem they need to fix. I thought this would be done but it's not. I continue to get letters from them, each more forceful than the one before. I keep calling them & get the same answer. I keep calling Discover, getting the same answers as well. I finally spoke to someone in "Pre-delinquency" department who says it doesn't show the account has been sold to a collection agency at all, ever. Every time I call I make it a point to explain the whole situation and ask about making payments. I am told the account is a good account, they would not send it out for collection if payments are being made regardless of the bankruptcy, and to continue making payments as I have been. I'm also told they're working on it & will call me withing 72 hrs. They never do. The collection agency suggested I write a letter to DB Servicing. No one at Discover knows who that is or how they might be connected. I couldn't find any information about them when I tried to research them. I don't want to send personal financial information to an unknown entity. The balance due and payment posting dates the collection agency has are different from what Discover has. That bothers me. It bothers me too that I am told to just ignore it. Discover has never asked me to pay the account off. I have never gotten a phone call from them trying to collect payment. The collection agency calls & leaves messages, clearly indicating they are "attempting to collect a debt". Embarrassing. My kids hear it. My other worry is about my credit. Discover has told me that I am responsible for finding out what they are reporting to the repositories. The collection agency says they don't report at all. I don't know if I should believe either one. This is turning into a nightmare. I don't know how to get it straightened out.
