I got my denial letter from Discover Tuesday. I applied on Sunday. They pulled Equifax. I called the number listed on the letter. I spoke with a CSR, she said you have to have at least a 610 score to be considered for the card. You cannot have any derog. info. The reasons for denial were: 1. Charge-off 2. Past or current deliquent accounts. I asked her what could I do to get the card. She said once the charge-offs and the late pays are gone then they would probably give me a card. I said to her that means if I would apply when the charge off came off and I still had late pays they would not give me the card. She said,"correct, you cannot not have any derogatory information and get a Discover card." I said, "let me get this right, I have to wait 7 years from when the late pay notation drops off to actually get this card?" "exactly, you cannot have any derogatory information and get a Discover card". I said to her so every application goes through a manual review? "Yes, we do not base our decision on scores only." I just gave up at that point. Well, Love you must have fell through the cracks or they saw a different report from what you posted. I started an investigation Sat. and applied Sun. and still didn't get approved. I know one thing, Discover will never get any business from me, ever!!!
Same reply I recieved from Discover when I called. Not sure how Love managed. The CS @ Discover said no way would they approve any derogs. Discover approvals are like CRA's scores random generated.
Discover is impossible. They are very fickle re approval requirements. And very mean about it, too, when you call for reconsideration. I gave up on them.
I never quailfied for Sears either I would not have one now. Never shop there. Discover wants to be competive w/ Visa & Mastercard but, they aren't trying very hard. Spouse has Discover and thinks it's great. but I have CitiBank it's better na nanna pooh
I don't think Discover is a great card anymore because there are a lot of other cash back cards out there now that give you more than Discover (Citi Dividend, Chase icard, etc.).
How did I get one then? I have 4 negatives on my credit reports and one is with an OLD Discover account. However I haven't had any negatives in the last 6 years and the worst of the 4 negatives was a meesly 60 day once. From what you are saying then they shouldn't have given me another card, plantium too, 0% BT and 9% APR after 6 months... Hmmmmmmm really makes you wonder why some people have luck and other don't. It's so unfair...
WTF?!!! I just got declined for a Discover plat. They pulled Ex. over 700 No negs, 2 inquiries last 6 mo., less than 40% usage, established accts, Amex, BofA, Citi, etc. and very high income. Disputed their inquiry and will not ask for their card again. Hmmmph!
I'm telling you they all draw names out of a hat. How else do you explain it? I think profitability may also have something to do with it. I'm one to carry a balance for about 9 months making large payments on the way and then paying the card off. Hubby, on the other hand, pays everything in full. Dani
I am asking myself the same question. I too got the card with a handful of negatives, maybe its the income, maybe they have a maximum credit limit they will accept. Maybe someone with a 700 did not seem profitable. Length of time at residence, on job? Just trying to make some sense of the matter...
There is no basic logic I would call and ask their reason. It would be interesting to hear why they turned you down. I do have a derog.
I'm not sure what they were looking at in my case. They did pull my experian report which was 690 at the time. It came to me in the mail as preapproved. Just a little note they did refuse me a year prior to that though.
I got approved on Sunday - don't know cl yet though. I have one negative due to fall off 8/02... got instant approval but when I called yesterday to ask about CL, all they could tell me was that I was approved 'today'? Weird. My negative is a 30 day and 90 day late from 8/95. They pulled Equifax and my score was 707. Ozzy.
I closed my account a long time ago because they tried to raise my interest rate when my total debt got high (despite perfect payment record). Have been paying it off on the old terms for a couple of years. I had hard times and was making mini payments for quite some time. Made one $400 payment (about 6 times the mini payment) and similar payments thereafter. I noticed on my credit report that as soon as I started making the bigger payments they started doing soft inqs on my credit. They're big on suckering you into high debt that you have no choice but to carry forever. I bet they wanted to raise my limit or offer me a sneaky BT deal. Too bad for them, it's closed, and will be totally paid off next month. FOREVER! -ingenue
I am kind of glad they denied me. It seems like they did me a favor. I won't have to worry able being caught in their trap.
