In the past month, I have begun the attempt to clean up my credit, disputing a number of items on my credit reports.

I have sent two dispute letters to Equifax, dated Dec. 1 and Dec. 7. I have received signed return receipts for both. I have not, however, heard anything else. No response, no letters, no investigation or even any label as "frivolous."

What should I do? Should I use their on-line service to dispute? I ordered my report through their on-line service, and I have 3 days of my 30-day subscription service left.

Or does their failure to respond to the letters I've already sent enable me to pursue a dispute on that front? If so, would investigating on-line jeopardize my chances to dispute due to lack of response?

In other news, I checked Experian on-line today, and of 5 disputes, 1 has been deleted (a judgement!), 2 remain, and 2 are still pending. The letter to Experian was sent on Dec. 8, the response was dated Dec. 13. I will hope for the best on the pending items and wait until next month to dispute the two "remains."

Thanks in advance for your help on this and all the good advice on this board.

They have 30 days from the date they received your letters, not the date you sent them, And then it takes time to get back to you in the mail. Their time is not up yet. Wait.

Equifax is the one CRA that does not send a letter acknowledging receipt of a dispute. TU and EX do. This does not mean they are not working on your disputes. Equifax will just send an updated report at the end of the investigation.

I agree with Breeze. The thirty day clock begins at the date they received the letters. Base your thirty days from that point (the date they signed the green card) and give it another week or so thereafter to get the updated report.

Thanks, and OK, I'll wait. One question, though: when I access my Equifax report on-line, does anyone know if it should show that the items are under dispute, even though I sent the request for investigation via US mail?

Also, does FCRA mean that if I do not hear from them by a reasonable time (a week or so) after 30 days from the day they signed the return receipt (Dec. 3 and Dec. 11), they are required by law to delete the disputed items?

    Thanks again, all!
